About the University ‘The University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu as a teaching-cum- affiliating University on 7th September, 1990 to cater the long-felt needs of the people of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu viz., Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari It is named after the renowned Tamil Poet, Professor P. Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897), the author of the famous verse drama Manonma- niam. It is his poem that has become “Tamil Taai Vaazhthu” the official invocation song for all functions in Tamil Nadu. The university is located in between Kanyakumari, ISRO, Kudankulam atomic power plant, Tiruchendur, Coutralam, Tenkasi - famous for temple and falls, and. pearl city (Tutucorin). Many chemical industries and thermal power plants are located in Tutueorin, ‘The University has under its jurisdiction 77 affiliated Colleges, 6 University Colleges and 4 Constituent Colleges, about 1,20,000 students {in regular mode and 40,000 students in distance mode, The main focus of the university is 10 produce individuals who have the expertise and intellectual curiosity to make a difference in their profession and the society and in conducting the research needed to meet the challenges facing the contemporary world. About the Departments Department of Chemistry was initiated as @ ‘Teaching Dept. in the year 1980 as aP.G centre of Madurai Kamaraj University and later in 1990 September it was inducted in Manonmaniaen ‘Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu. [Now this department is DST-FIST-Phase IL funded and has flourished into a bigger ‘Teaching — cum- research department. It offers academic programme of M.Sc Integrated, M.Sc, ‘MPhil and Ph.D in Chemistry. The department hhas produced 70 Ph.Ds and published more than 500 papers in reputed journals Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry ‘was established in 2006, It provides instruc- tional and research training to the students in the areas of organic drug synthesis, character- ization, drug testing etc. Some of the leading Pharmaceutical Industries are under collabora- tion with this Department. From 2014-2015, this Department jointly with the Department of Chemistry offers M.Sc. Organic Chemistry course. The major areas of research are natural products chemistry and studies on ligand copper complexes of certain hydroxyflavones tc. This Department has so far produced 13, Ph.Ds and a good number of publications in reputed Journals.
