Background: High cholesterol levels in body is a problem that often occurs in the community.
The state of abnormal lipid metabolism in the body which is characterized by increasing or
decreasing in plasma lipid fraction is called dyslipidemia. Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) is
one of the natural material with a high flavonoid content and have potential to control lipid
levels in the body. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of moringa leaves
extracts on triglycerides and HDL levels in rats induced by high-fat feed and PTU.
Methods: This research is an experimental study using post test control group, which used 36
rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into 6 groups, namely 3 control groups and 3 treatment
groups. Group P1, P2, and P3 is a group of treatment-induced high-fat feed with PTU and
moringa leaf extract with different doses of 300 mg/kgBW, 500 mg/kgBW, and 700 mg/kgBW.
Group K1, K2, and K3 as a control group. K1 was only given a standard feed and aquades, K2
induced by high-fat feed and PTU and aquades, and K3 induced by high-fat feed and PTU and
given simvastatin at a dose of 0.18 mg/day. Each group received treatment for 21 days and
samples were taken on day 22. Data was analyzed using parametric statistical tests, which test
was One-Way ANOVA followed by post hoc LSD test.
Results: One-Way ANOVA test showed no significant differences on triglycerides levels (p =
0.051) after treatment. One-Way ANOVA test showed that there were significant differences on
HDL levels (p = 0.000) after treatment. Followed by post hoc LSD test on HDL to compare HDL
levels in each group. Only P2 and P3 groups which have a significant effect on levels of HDL
with a significance value 0.008 and 0.019.
Conclusion: Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) extract has a significant effect on HDL levels in
rats induced by high-fat feed with PTU and lacked significant effect on triglyceride levels in rats.
