Dr. Raghu V. Prakash, currently Professor, Machine

Design Section, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Indian Institute of Technology Madras received his
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from
College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras in First Class
with Distinction. He obtained his Master’s degree (by
Research) and Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in
1989 and 1993 respectively.

Dr. Raghu Prakash specializes in the areas of fatigue, fracture of materials (metals,
composites, hybrids), structural integrity assessment and remaining life prediction of
critical components used in aircraft, automotive, power-plant and process industries.
He has more than twenty five years of professional experience in the field of fatigue
and fracture and has hands-on experience in handling industrial problems relating to
life prediction. He is a voting rights member of ASTM International (technical
committees, D-30, E-08 and E-28) since 90’s and has won several prestigious awards
(Binani Gold Medal, Indian Institute of Metals) and scholarships, fellowships. He has
travelled extensively to the North Americas, Europe, South East Asia as part of his
professional activities. At IIT-Madras, he teaches a host of subjects relating to
fatigue, fracture mechanics, materials science, design with advanced materials and
product design. He has guided more than 55 students for their Master’s degree and 14
students for their M.S/Ph.D. degree. Nearly 23 students are being guided for their
Ph.D., MS degrees. He brings with him a rich and rare combination of industrial
experience, scientific and academic knowledge, which offers tremendous potential
for several companies to consult him on critical problems. He has been the editor of
two books and published more than 100 journal papers and International conference
papers on the areas of fatigue, fracture mechanics, materials characterization, of
which many are with ASTM. He is a regular organizer of Topics in ASME
International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition since 2009 on topics
of Materials Processing and Characterization, Fracture Mechanics and general
Design.
