2 State eight (8) factors considered in selecting site for a steam Power Plant for economic and efficient
generation of power.
3 Sketch the schematic arrangement of a coal fired Steam Power Plant.
4 A Steam Power Plant of 10MW capacity uses coal of calorific value of 6400kCal/kg. The station
thermal efficiency and the electrical generation efficiency are 30% and 92% respectively. Calculate
the quantity of coal required per hour when the plant is working at full load.
5 State eight (8) advantages and six (6) disadvantages of a Nuclear Power Plant..

8 A hydroelectric power station has a reservoir of 2.4km2 area and a capacity of 5 x 106 m3. The
effective head of water is 100m. The penstock, turbine and generator efficiencies are respectively
95%, 90% and 85%. Calculate the (a) total electrical energy that can be generated from power
station. (b) fall in the reservoir level if a load has been supplied for three hours.
9. A run-off river hydroelectric power plant with pondage has the following data:
Installed capacity = 10MW; Water head = 20m; Overall efficiency = 80%; Load factor = 40%.
Calculate the river discharge in m3/s required for the plant. (b) If on a particular day, the river flow is 20m3/s,
what load factor can the plant supply?
10. An atomic power reactor can deliver 300MW. If due to fission of each atom of U-235, the energy
released is 200MeV, calculate the mass of U-235 fissioned per hour.
11. Calculate the output power of a U-235 reactor if it takes 30 days to use up 2kg of fuel given that
energy released is 200MeV. Avogadro’s number is 6.023 x 1023 per kilomole. And 1eV = 1.602 x 10-19J.

16. A generating station has a maximum demand of 25MW, a load factor of 60%, a plant capacity factor
of 50% and a plant use factor of 72%. Calculate the (a) reserve capacity of the plant (b) daily energy
produced and (c) maximum energy that could be produced daily if the plant, while running as per schedule,
were fully loaded.
17. A generating power station has a maximum demand of 15MW. The load factor of 50%, and plant
capacity factor is 40% and a plant use factor of 72%. Calculate the reserve capacity of the plant.

21. A power station has the following daily load cycle:


260MW for 6 hours; 200MW for 8 hours; 160MW for 4 hours; 100MW for 6 hours.
If the power station is equipped with four sets of 75 MW each, calculate the (i) daily load factor (ii) plant
capacity factor (iii) daily heat and fuel requirements per day if the calorific value of oil used is 10,000
kCal/kg and average heat rate of station is 2860 kCal/kWh.

24. The equipment in a power station costs N 15,600,000.00 with a salvage value of N 6,000,000.00 at
the end of 25 years. Determine the depreciation value of the equipment at the end of 20years using (a)
Straight line method (b) Diminish value method (c) Sinking fund method at 5% annual compound interest.
