Student Name: SOMS SIBANDA Session Date: 17TH NOV 2017
Location/Venue: WBA ACADEMY Time: 11:30am

Number of 12 Age 16-18 Ability Level: Elite players

Participants Range:

Medical Na, before the session all players where questioned about any medical
Information: problems as well as injuries.

Nearest First Aid WBA academy building first aid room onsite.
Point:

Particular Needs All players must have minimal ability to play football this includes good
of Participants: stamina and awareness as well as correct technique to perform certain
skills such as passing shooting and dribbling.

Equipment needs Balls, bibs, goals and cones will be used.

Health and All players must wear appropriate kit also the correct footwear and shin
safety issues pads must be worn. All jewellery must be removed and the playing
surface should be checked before playing.

Session Aim: The aim of the session is the encourage players to make the Timings
correct decisions under pressure, allowing them to create
chances and score goals quickly.

Key Technical The first drill focuses on how well players can manage the ball
Aspects with a small number of players involved. The final drill looks at
how well players manage the ball in a group looking to find
space and key passes so they can score goals.

Warm Up Players will take part in a two lap jog followed by static
Activities stretches then dynamic stretches and finally sprints .
(Overview)

Session content My first drill is a 2v2 session with 4 mini goals to score in. This
– drills and atdrill is set up in the centre circle and the aim is the see how well
progressions
two players can move the ball and score goals vs 2 defenders
(Include without conceding any goals themselves. This drill when
Coaching applied correctly will help the players improve their decision
Points & making as well as movement so that they can be better off and
Diagrams) on the ball in possession. One progression I used was the
players had to score in only two goals and the winner stays on
this idea is to see how the players approach the game will they
sit in and defend one goal each or would they press their
opponents looking to win the ball back and score goals quickly.

When the players loose possession the drill focuses on how well
they can work as a pair to not concede any goals and retain
possession affectively. During games there will be times where
you will have to keep possession well with pressure being
applied this will help you control the tempo of the game maybe
to see the game out or hold onto a lead or draw.

My second session was a 5v5 game in the 18 yard box. The aim
of the game was to defend 10 faces of play then attack 10
phases of play. For the game to be affective the attackers need
to move the ball quickly and effectively so that the defenders
can be moved out of possession and goals can be scored
quickly.

The defenders need to stay organised and show the attackers

away from goal and when opportunities are created clearances
can be made and the defenders can regroup quickly. All players
need to know their roles and communication and good quality
of play will really help this drill progress. The progression for
this drill was to limit the attackers to only two touches per
player and the defenders had to make 3 passes before clearing
the ball. The idea of the progression is to add more pressure to
all players and give them something to think about.
Cool – Down
Activities Cool down will be a slow jog around the pitch the static

stretches for 10 minutes to finish off this is to limit the amount
of injuries obtained after sessions usually pulls and strains.

Task 2 – P5/M4 Deliver a sports coaching session, with tutor support.

This has already been done!
Task 3 – P6 carry out a review of the planning and delivery of a sports coaching session, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
(At least 3 strengths and 3 areas for improvement)

One of my strengths was my communication. This is because when I was delivering the session I was speaking loud and confidently which
meant that the group could understand what I was teaching and meant I did not have to explain my self over and over again which would
waste time. Being confident and speaking loudly also shows you know what you are talking about and you have knowledge behind the actual
sport itself. When I was doing the coaching session I had all the participants’ full attention and also had them listening well. What I mean by
this is when I was speaking they didn’t need to ask me to say it again because I was loud there for communication was one of my strengths.
Another strength in my coaching session was the fact that I had the knowledge to teach so my educating role was a strength. I was able to
show the correct way the moves play out and also relate the moves to a competitive situation. This was when I was showing the agility ladder
drills. When doing this I told them that the square resembles the opponents centre and the two sides of each square were the left and right
side of the opponent. The one drill that really resembled a competitive environment was the advanced agility ladder drill. This was where I got
the participants to step out to the side of the box each time they moved in to a square because it made the participant off line so the
opponent would not be able to strike and what I was teaching was the role of movement as well as footwork in a competitive situation. The
last strength would be the motivator role I did. This is because when all the participants were giving up and they were getting tired I kept
telling them “you’re doing great” and “keep it up” as well as “keep going, not long to go now”. What this did was make them work harder than
they were doing because when you tell them not long to go now even tho there is a bit of a longer time they will want to push themselves
faster and stronger so they can finish the drill knowing they put as much effort in as they can. Motivation is what makes us go harder and
keeps our hopes up that doing all this will benefit them in the long run which is what I was trying to make them see. The first weakness I had in
my session was the fact that I demonstrated for too long at times. This was because when I was demonstrating the exercises at times I did do
the full set of exercise in front of them which is a bit over the time I should spend demonstrating since the students only need one to two
press-ups/ sit-ups demonstrated before they understand what to do. In some cases I only demonstrated a few times which was good however,
in most cases I did demonstrate too long and need to demonstrate only a few times until they understand the drill. The next weakness I had in
my coaching session was not checking that jewellery was off when starting the session. When I bought them all in I did get in to the session
straight away after checking the fire exits. Once is started I did not ask if jewellery was off which is dangerous for a coach like me to do. This is
because jewellery could rip out the ear and could also fall off and get stamped on by the team because people won’t be looking on the floor
for earrings, they will be focusing on the session. The sport boxing when doing footwork does not really need to have participants remove
jewellery however it is bad for a coach in any sport not to check this and I will do next time. The last weakness of my session was the fact that
it was more of a circuit based session instead of a coaching session meaning the students done quite a lot that they already knew however,
this does help them in the long run. When doing this I did teach pointers and I did make sure they learnt something but, I didn’t coach too
much and made sure they done the drill over and over again which wasn’t too bad but again coaching needs to be implemented in to the
session and it should not have been too much of a circuit.

M5 Evaluate the planning and delivery of a sports coaching session, suggesting how improvements could be reached in the identified areas.
(You may want to include why you planned the session? What happened? Maybe a new plan? And why?) D3 Justify suggestions made in
relation to the development plan. (Justify the reasons you change and adapted your plan, link to professional coaches)

Development of the Session (M5)

If some participants What I would do in this situation is make the situation less
were struggling to advanced. What I mean by this is when a student is struggling with
cope with the session a certain skill or technique in the sport then I would break the
that you delivered move down for the student to make it easier. An example of this
describe how you would be in the sport kickboxing. This would be if a student was
would adapt the learning a kick for example the spinning side kick. Instead of
session to make it saying “do a spinning side kick” and waiting for them to
more achievable for demonstrate this I would break the kick down and make sure they
them know how to do this. The break down would be to start in left
stance then move the left leg across the right leg then turn while
(Give Examples) looking backwards and then finally lift your back leg up and
chamber it in to an extension to fully complete the kick. Another
example would be in badminton. This works the same way if a
student needed to learn the forehand smash then I would break it
down. The forehand smash is one of the smashes you can do. How
to do this is you first start with the forehand grip and turn your
body so you are sideways to the net. Then move your weight on to
your back foot and bend your elbow. Once your elbow is bent you
must lock wrists and swing forward, make sure your elbow is
straight when you hit the shuttle. You must make sure your wrist
goes sown in a snapping action when hitting the shuttle, angle the
shuttle so it will land next to your opponent’s court then follow
through and move your weight to your front foot.

If some participants In this situation I am going to need to advance the session. I would
were to find the do this in my own sport as an innovator in kickboxing. What I
session too easy would do is make sure everyone starts off basic learning a basic
describe how you move such as the crescent kick. If they find this easy then I will
would adapt the make sure they start doing jumping crescent kicks. This would
session to make it help them on their legs with their hip flexors and thigh flexors.
more challenging for This would make the work overall harder however, if they keep
them finding this easy then I would make them do jumping spinning
crescent kicks in a combination on the pads which will be really
(Give Examples) hard and a lot of fitness would be required. Another example
would be in any sport and that would be increasing the intensity
of the exercise instead of changing the moves around and this
goes for most sports such as swimming and football as well as
rugby and martial arts. What I mean by this is you could be doing
loads of reps of exercise and loads of running however, if they
were finding it too easy then you would be doing more reps with
the exersise changed a bit and possibly doing it for a longer time
meaning the work gets harder and more demanding for athletes
of an advanced level.

Identify what the The session I had done previously had the aim of (basic footwork
aims and content of for boxing) which meant the lesson would be based on learning
the next session the basic footwork and drills for footwork. For the next session I
might be following would advance this and make sure the aim of the next session
this one (progression) would be to put the foot work in to a competitive nature and
and explain why learn how to move around real opponents who are ready to
attack. On the first session I was made them use the agility ladder
(Give Examples) and I taught them how to use their basic footwork to project in
and out of the ladders squares so when it comes to the second
session I will make sure I progress them by partnering them up
and having one of them with gloves and one with pads. When
they are partnered up the one with pads will be throwing out slow
punches and the one with the gloves will be evading the strikes
using footwork I taught them from the first session. I would
progress this because when fighting anyone weather its self-
defence or it is in the ring/on the mats you will always need to
know basic footwork/ advanced footwork to beat the opponent.
Another way I would change the session in to progression would
basically be to make the session more of a teaching session rather
than a circuit session. When doing the second session I will make
sure to explain about the skills in more depth and make sure I
demonstrate how to do the skill and why it is needed in a
competitive or real situation. I could do this by making sure they
do not go really fast as if it is circuit but they get stopped each
time for the next technique. What I mean is they learn more in the
session rather than me just watching them do a series of
exercises.

Explain 2 of your One main strength as a sports coach was the involvement I done.
main strengths and 2 What I mean by this is I made sure everybody was involved so
of your main areas for when people were doing something like the agility ladder because
improvement as a it is a one for one sort of drill I made sure everyone who was
sports coach waiting were doing an exercise of my choice such as star jumps or
sit-ups etc. When they were doing the drills when copying my
movements they all went at the same time which was once again
involvement of the whole group I had. Another strength I had was
my communication because I was able to talk quite loud so the
group could hear me and from the feedback I can see that I was
quite clear and the group understood everything I was making
them do. My communication also helped me when I was showing
my demonstrations because from the video I did not have to
repeat myself over and over again which helped a lot because I
could get more drills in. My weakness was the fact that I had
demonstrated for too long which shortened the time of the drill.
The one time I demonstrated too long was when I was showing
the exercise to do for press ups. I demonstrated the whole set of
press-ups which was 10 press ups. This left the group standing and
waiting while I did the exercise therefore shortening the time I
had to make them do the drills. I could improve on this weakness
by shortening the time doing demonstrations and lengthen the
time doing the drills. The next weakness was the fact that I was
making it more of a circuit training session instead of a teaching
lesson. This is because when I was doing the session I made sure
they continuously done the drill and also made sure they were
doing a lot of exersise as well. When doing this I should have
really taught more pointers and showed how to do certain moves
better, I also should have said what the muscles were that we
were using and demonstrate how the moves would help you in a
fight.

Personal Development Plan (D2, 3)

Justify (offer logical reasons) the session that you planned. Why did you choose to deliver
this particular session with this group?

The main reason I coached the session is because I have 11 years of experience in the
sport. This means I know how to perform the moves as well as coach the techniques.
When I planned the session I based it on basic footwork because when you are a boxer
and you go in to the ring or even just to self-defend yourself you need to have the
knowledge of basic footwork which Is why my coaching session was based on it. To adapt
the coaching session to become more advanced next time I would add in combinations
while using the footwork. I also used footwork as the starting point because when I
started kickboxing and I had to learn the basics the first thing my instructor taught me was
footwork because it is a must have in any situation around our sport martial arts. I also
taught footwork because is used in many different sports such as football and rugby as
well as boxing and MMA. The sports I have mentioned all rely on footwork and I know this
because when I watch football players train they are normally training on fast explosive
movements in the footwork area of the sport.

How would you adapt your coaching style if you were to deliver the same session again,
and why?
I wasn’t at all democratic. What I mean by this is when I was coaching I was autocratic and
made sure I taught and got them to do everything themselves after so I demonstrated and
said get on with it as well as giving motivation etc. I would adapt my coaching style by
becoming more democratic and giving feedback for example when the students are doing
the drills I could get my phone or I pad and video record them which would then allow me
to stop them after the drill and show them how they do the drill but also how to improve
on the drill. When I was coaching, I did make the mistake of addressing the situation as if
they are doing the move incorrectly when really, I should have made sure they did not feel
discouraged and should have made them feel as if they are pulling off the technique
correctly however, it needs certain tweaks to perfect so when I coach my next session I
am going to make sure I make them feel happy and not insecure about the moves. My
instructor called Antonio makes sure when he coaches his students that every so often he
stops them and shows them what they are doing compared to what they should be doing.
What I mean by this is he tells them to watch his demonstrate how they are doing the
move then he shows them a few pointers so execute the move even better which gives
them more knowledge in the sport at the same time. Some coaches in football would use
shouting techniques to make sure their students get the message that they need to keep
practicing to get better. I have seen many coaches stop in the middle or at the end of class
to talk to the students and go over what they have learnt, some normally ask questions to
the students to do with how the skills they have learnt could come in handy in a real
situation e.g. a fight which is what I would do to change my way of coaching and make
sure the students have actually learnt something rather than assuming they have.

How would you change the way you communicate with participants in future coaching
sessions, and why?
In my coaching session I was overall very confident and was able to talk clearly without
stuttering. This was because when I was coaching the demonstrations I broke down the
technique and made sure they could understand how to pull off the certain move I was
teaching. I would change the way I communicate with my students by changing my tone
first of all because when coaching you need to know who gets the deeper or the lighter
tone for example when coaching kids I will do a very light tone and make sure I do not
raise my voice unless it is needed however, for adults my tone will be a little more deeper
and more demanding. I have coached children before and when I did I had to use my voice
at a very light tone, this made them feel relaxed and comfortable in the lessons
environment. If I use tone it will be to tell them off for example when a child is messing
around or he is not doing what I ask after I have told him/her what I want them to do then
I will not shout but raise my voice a bit and make it more deeper to send a message to
them that I am not messing around and I am being serious about the student changing
their attitude. This gives the child discipline which builds them in character too.
When coaching my next session I am going to need to make my tone more demanding so
they think of me as more of a coach than a friend. Another way I could change my
communication as a coach is being double positive. This basically means when coaching
even if im upset or down I put a smile on my face and give the participants complements
when doing the drills because all students like to be praised by time to time and also if I
was upset then the mood would die down and the students won’t feel too great doing the
drills because the environment is not positive. I could also be positive by correcting the
participants mistakes but not too harsh. When doing this I will address the problem of the
move but make sure I don’t discourage them otherwise they may feel insecure which is
not what I want, what I want is to make them feel as if they are doing it correctly but it
does need little tweaks to perfect the move. I was told “it takes years to perfect moves
“which is correct since I was a slow learner and it’s been 11 years and im still learning.

Explain what techniques you used to manage the behaviour of the group. Did these work
well? If so, explain why. If not, what alternative techniques would work better in future
sessions?

Managing the group went really well because the group were well behaved and done
exactly what I told them without talking back to me. When managing the group it was
done well because I had a clear objective and that was to learn the footwork. When doing
this I showed I had the knowledge to back up my points and was able to show the
technique of the skill without stuttering or stopping to think of what the technique is
which showed I knew what I was doing. When you know what you’re doing it’s easy for
the students to understand and get the hang of it quite easy. When coaching the group I
was quite demanding so I made sure they done what I said when I asked without any
backtalk and if anyone does give me back talk then I will use exercise as punishment to
get the message that im in charge and they are not. One thing I did to keep them happy
and make sure they don’t become disrespectful is the motivation side of it. When I was
watching them do the drills I was telling them to “ keep going “ and also kept saying
“you’re doing great keep it up “. This made the students feel batter and also made them
feel as if they are doing something right which then led them to want to carry on. To
manage the group better I will become more assertive. By this I mean when I was
coaching I did allow people to talk at times when I was demonstrating because it was
quiet and did not distract me however, being more assertive meaning making sure they
are silent when im demonstrating would help them concentrate a lot more. If I made sure
they was silent then the students could watch every technique and learn how to do the
move even better than they could before. Overall the groups behaviour was great and
they did not make the session hassle for me, they listened to me clearly because I had
confidence and knew what I was doing and if I had to be more assertive I would be in the
next session I teach.

What will you do in the future to help develop your coaching ability (e.g. training
courses)?
To help my future ability because I want to be a kickboxing instructor would be to take a
medical first aid course and possibly and instructor course to learn more about teaching
and how to deliver lessons appropriately. This is because as an instructor I am going to
need to be able to provide medical help for a student who becomes injured and know
what I must do in that situation for example if a student gets a head kick and gets knocked
out I know that the first thing to do is support their body by putting them in a recovery
position and make sure they are seated on a chair or bench when they wake up. I will then
use an ice pack and make sure when they awaken to hold the cold compress to their head
and rest for a while, if there dizziness does not go and the students condition worsens
then call an ambulance and comfort them till they arrive. Another thing I am doing right
now which will help me in the future is getting my grade which means going up the belt
system. The belt system consist of 15 belts with white being the lowest and black being
the highest. Right now I am currently at the rank of brown belt so I need to go up 3 more
belts to become black belt. I might want to go on to another course after college to gain
further knowledge however, I have not decided yet. Last of all I will continue to coach at
my club when asked to, to get the experience required to coach. I will coach the
techniques and the skills in the sport as well as train on them in my own time to become
better at the techniques Im teaching. At the moment I am currently training my brother
and my mum in HIIT training every night as well as teaching my brother how to pull off
certain moves and the techniques within the skill. This training will add to my experience
as an instructor and will help me when teaching since when you teach you need
confidence and motivation so when I teach I use both which also helps me out.
