Digging deeper into

the roots
Police on August 17 arrested a 52-year-old Grade 3 teacher in Culasi town
in Antique for allegedly selling illegal drugs. After a week, another high school
teacher was arrested in a buy-bust operation in Quirino for selling shabu.
These incidents hapened in a span of two weeks and posed a predicament to
the nation and school, to be specific.
Right from the beginning, the Duterte administration has made its prime
campaign very clear to every Filipino --- vicious war against drugs. The num-
ber of self-confessed drug addicts who surrendered and the rise of death of
drug addicts in nationwide police operations are not the only evidence that
war on drugs is getting on country’s pedestal. Even the proposed mandatory
drug testing in all public and private schools has sent shock waves of reactions
through the academe just like how people reacted on the arrest of the two
educators.
For decades, the problem on drugs has not been the top priority of pre-
vious administrations. And now that finally the government is serious as it
has seen enough of its adversarial effects to the nation, it is also time for the
Department of Education to embrace these government’s efforts to fight illegal
drugs.
EDITORIAL It is true that educational environment
must be free from negative influences. It must
be a place where one can learn and inspire to pursue his or her future endeav-
ors. But the force and influence of illegal drugs may strongly hinder students’
future.
Implementing this mandatory drug testing to all students in high school
will surely help the government in identifying teenagers who are already in
the brink of being drug dependent. To date, there are reports that there is an
increase in the use of marijauna among high school students which imply that When Are We Going To Learn?
there might be more students using and exploring the effects of illegal drugs.
This move will not only help the school but also the students as well as their
parents. With this early initiative, government can give immediate remedy to
the child who is greatly affected by illegal drugs before it gets worse.
