Subject: Wastewater Overflow and bad odour issues

Following a join site visit with the honorable member of the general assembly of Mauritius Mr
Adil Ameer Mea, effected Wednesday 16th December 2016, at the premises of the inhabitant of
Alfred Gelle Street, Cite-Martial, P-Louis.

The following problems have been observed:

Sewerage Pipes Conditions:

By visual inspection, it seems the vitrified clay pipes which have been laid since years, were
affected by roots of trees and misuse. The smooth interior surface of the pipes was getting
scoured due to continuous abrasion caused by the suspended solid present in the pipes, thus
limiting the minimum self cleansing velocity in the sewerage system.

The diameter of pipe

The diameter of pipe (110mm) , seems too small in size, and this causes overfilling in the
sewerage system. Connections of pipes have faulty joints. This causes bad odour and water
stagnation.

Rain water infiltration through Gully trap

(i) Low Sewage Gullies ~ Gullies are found at the same level of ground.
(ii) Cracked and Faulty Gully Trap ~ Rain water infiltrate into sewers system through
the cracks.

Manhole

Several cracks have been observed into existing manhole chambers. These cracks help the
infiltration of surface water to the sewerage system. The manholes covers are not well fitted
and have defects. This causes bad odour and allows infestation of cockroach and rats activities.

Recommendations:

(i) VC pipes (110mm) should be removed and replaced by 160mm UPVc pipe.
(ii) Existing manhole should be pull down and construct new one.
(iii) Existing gully trap should remove from the service lane.
