EMERGING CIVIL ENGINEER AWARD
2018

• The Emerging Civil Engineer Award is an annual

competition organised by the Sri Lanka Association of the
Institution of Civil Engineers.
• The award aims to identify and reward the most innovative
civil engineering student in Sri Lanka and to encourage
innovative thinking among all civil engineering students.
Emerging Civil Engineer Award 2018
(Cont…)
The competition consists of three phases;
1.The Idea
2.The Essay
3.The Presentation
Phase I – The idea
• In the Idea phase the candidates will submit a short
description of a Civil Engineering issue that they have
witnessed in Sri Lanka and a short description of a
solution/idea to mitigate that issue.
• The Idea phase is a qualification stage designed to make
sure that the candidates are in the right track from the
beginning of the competition
Phase I – The idea
• Title of Idea - Give a single line with relevant key words
while adequately describing the attractiveness of your
solution to the civil engineering professionals.
Example – Idea Phase

Title of Idea

Using Stabilised Soil blocks as sustainable alternative to

cement blocks in construction of non load bearing walls in
High-rise Residential buildings in Sri Lanka.
Phase I – The idea
• Description of the Civil Engineering issue in Sri Lanka -
Give a short description of a civil engineering issue that is
currently being faced in Sri Lanka and for which you are
providing a solution. Limit 500 Characters.
Example – Idea Phase

Description of the Civil Engineering issue in Sri Lanka

This should highlight the problem that you are going to solve.
• Eg. The solution will contribute towards energy security in
the Country by optimally using the available energy.
• How: The high energy consumption in brick
manufacturing: The brick buildings consuming energy for
thermal comfort:
Phase I – The idea
• List some of the solutions used to deal with the above
mentioned Civil Engineering issue in Sri Lanka.
(Maximum 3 solutions) - A numbered list of the present
solutions in point form. One line per present solution. Do
not give explanations for the solutions. Limit 500
Characters.
Example – Idea Phase
List some of the solutions to deal with the above
mentioned Civil Engineering issue in Sri Lanka.
• Modify the constituents of bricks and the process of brick making
(which is the material that contributes to the energy utilisation)
• Identify an efficient (energy and economically both) Construction
material other than What is presently to replace bricks
• New Energy Generation Methods (Low price, High Quantity)
Phase I – The idea
• Description of the solution to the stated Civil
Engineering issue - Give a short description of the solution
you believe will help to mitigate the Civil Engineering issue
mentioned above. Limit 500 Characters .
Example – Idea Phase
Description of the solution to the stated Civil
Engineering issue
Initial studies done in India shows that less energy is
consumed in manufacturing of Soil blocks compared to
Cement blocks and shows that the thermal conductivity
of Stabilised Soil blocks is less and offers better thermal
comfort than Cement blocks. Therefore Stabilized soil
blocks would be a more sustainable alternative to cement
blocks for construction of non-load bearing walls in High-
rise buildings in Sri Lanka.
Example – Idea Phase
Description of the solution to the stated Civil Engineering issue
In this you need to mention the gap in the present work towards your
present solution
Here you must state why are you doing this ? How would you
contribute to the community ? By checking whether it is true because
there is not enough evidence ? Is because the energy saving has not
been quantified? Is it because there had been no studies on Sri
Lankan soil types? Or is it that you are proposing a new brick burning
method ? Or is it a new construction method ? Etc., So tell us
specifically what you will target in this research/project. )
Phase I – The idea
• Methods of verification - Give a short description or list of
the verification methods you are planning to use for the
justification of the applicability of the proposed solution and
why it is best suited for Sri Lanka.
Phase I – The idea
• At the idea stage of the competition, a candidate is not
expected to perform any analysis on the suitability of the
solution but need to demonstrate that he/she possess an
idea on the need of a suitable method(s) of verifications for
any solution. Limit 500 Characters
Example – Idea Phase
Methods of verification
• Cost Analysis – To find how cost effective is building using Stabilised
soil blocks is compared to Cement blocks in Sri Lanka.
• Evaluate the embodied energy of both Stabilised soil blocks and
Cement blocks – To find which of the two is requires less energy to
manufacture in Sri Lanka
Example – Idea Phase
Methods of verification
• This should show that you will perform something that had not been done
before OR something that had not been confirmed with adequate
trials/examples
• Like It has been mentioned above; You can undertake a part that you try to
defend as your contribution to the engineering community – eg: you have
selected only part of the process - manufacturing; You could have also
taken the air-conditioning loss part after placing: you could have selected
part, You could have taken an evaluation of a field verification – is it the
same way that it is being practiced: The picture may be rosy but the reality
is different
Phase I – The idea

• Expected results - Give a short description of the results

that you are expecting to present as the final output of the
proposed project. List the outputs (graphs, tables or
product performance) that would reflect why your
proposed solution should be given the first prize in this
competition.
Phase I – The idea
• At the idea stage, a candidate is not expected to produce
results but express how the results would be finally
displayed in a quantitative manner so that the examiners
could capture the depth of the proposal and the vision of
the candidate. Limit 500 Characters.
Example – Idea Phase
Expected results
Cost analysis – It is expected that Stabilised soil blocks will
be more cost effective in manufacturing than cement blocks.
The results can be presented in a table comparing the cost
incurred at different stages in the complete life cycle of both
products.
Energy embodied – It is expected that Stabilised soil blocks
will consume less energy. The results can be presented in a
table listing the energy consumed at different stages in the
life cycle of both the products.
Phase I – The idea
• Candidates are allowed to propose solutions that are being
implemented for similar issues in another country (but not in
Sri Lanka).
• Candidates might need to prove the suitability of such
solutions with respect to Sri Lanka in the later stages of the
competition.
• Each candidate is allowed to make up to 3 different
submissions in the Idea phase.
Phase I – The idea

• The deadline for submission of The Idea is

18th February 2018.
