Ring Type Joint Flange is a method of ensuring leak proof flange connection at high
pressures. A metal ring is compressed into a hexagonal groove on the face of the flange
to make the seal. This jointing method can be employed on Weld Neck, Slip-on and Blind
Flange. The flanges seal when the bolts are tightened and the gasket is compressed into
the groove making a metal to metal seal. An RTJ flange usually has a raised face with the
groove machined into the face of the flange. The raised face doesn’t serve as a way to
contain the pressure.
The benefits of using an RTJ flange and ring is that the gasket is confined to a groove and
has two sealing surfaces. The groove assures that the ring centers itself when the bolts
are tightened. It also is self actuating meaning that the sealing pressure increases when
the process pressure increases.
The disadvantages of using RTJ Flanges is that ring type joint grooves can accumulate
dirt or moisture when the flange is open. Since the seal is a metal on metal connection, a
small amount of damage on the narrow sealing surface(s) may lead to a leak. Additionally,
the grooves and gasket must align properly in order to assemble the flange and obtain a

seal. They must stay aligned throughout the operating cycle. This is important if you are
flanging up to dissimilar metals like stainless steel to carbon steel flanges.
The Ring Type Joint flanges are typically used in high pressure (Class 600 and higher
rating) and/or high temperature services above 800°F (427°C). They have grooves cut
into their faces which steel ring gaskets. The flanges seal when tightened bolts compress
the gasket between the flanges into the grooves, deforming (or Coining) the gasket to
make intimate contact inside the grooves, creating a metal to metal seal.
An RTJ flange may have a raised face with a ring groove machined into it. This raised face
does not serve as any part of the sealing means. For RTJ flanges that seal with ring
gaskets, the raised faces of the connected and tightened flanges may contact each other.
In this case the compressed gasket will not bear additional load beyond the bolt tension,
vibration and movement cannot further crush the gasket and lessen the connecting
tension.
Design Considerations
When removing the RTJ connection, the flanges must be forcibly separated to release the
ring from the groove. Because of this, there needs to be sufficient access for removal of
the flanges and removal of the ring.
With the wide acceptance of and significant usage of the spiral wound gasket in high
pressure service, RTJ type flangesaren’t as common as raised face flanges.
Consideration should be made during the design to ensure that additional rings are
available when connections need to be broken.
RING TYPE JOINT FLANGES (RTJ) OR RING JOINT FACING FLANGES (R-JF):
RTJ flanges have grooves cut into their faces which accept steel Ring Gaskets. RTJ

(e) The edge (periphery) of each ring joint flange shall be marked with the letter R and the
corresponding ring groove number.
NOTES:
(1) The height of the raised portion is equal to the depth of the groove dimension, E, but is
not subjected to the tolerances for E. Former full-face contour may be used.
(2) For ring joints with lapped flanges in Classes 300 and 600, ring and groove number
R30 is used instead of R31.
TOLERANCES:
E (depth) +0.4 -0.0, F (width) ±0.2, P (pitch diameter) ±0.13, R (radius at bottom)≤ 2 + 0.8
-0.0, > 2 ± 0.8,
23°(angle) ± 1/2°
RTJ flanges seal when tightened bolts compress the gasket between the flanges into the
grooves, deforming (or “Coining”) the gasket to make Intimate Contact inside the grooves,
creating a metal to metal seal.
Ring Type Joint gaskets are metallic sealing rings, suitable for high-pressure and
high-temperature applications. They are always applied to special, accompanying flanges
which ensure good, reliable sealing with the correct choice of profiles and material.
An RTJ flange may have a raised face with a ring groove machined into it. This raised face

gaskets, the raised faces of the connected and tightened flanges may contact each
other.
In this case the already coined gasket will not bear additional load beyond the bolt tension,
vibration and movement cannot further crush the gasket and lessen the connecting
tension.
