But Mohd Rafi never was money minded as Lata Mangeshkar and was a
very simple and humble man . His opinion was that since singers had no
role in the success or failure of a movie they could not stake a claim to the
Royalty from the proceeds of a films success. He contended that their role

song and they had no right to ask for a slice from the producers once they
had been paid for the song.

her terms she was not keen at all to sing with him. Mohd Rafi who till this
period had been quite about the problems created by Lata in a rare
outburst of ego said that if she wasn't keen on singing with him neither
was he interested in singing with her. If Lata Mangeshkar is No.1 so is
Mohd Rafi said he in a rare outburst of self ego.

This was in the early 1960s and by this period both of them were indeed
ruling the roost in the Hindi film music industry. They did not sing together
for many years together after this episode with the results being that
Music directors of those times simply bringing up a different singer once a
duet was to be sung, most of the times Lata Mangeshkar being replaced
by Suman Kalyanpur as the female singer. A majority of the times it was
Lata Mangeshkar who was replaced because Mohd Rafi was by this time
far ahead of her in playback singing skills and finding a replacement for
him and getting a guaranteed hit score was a very difficult task. But as far
as Lata Mangeshkar was concerned Suman Kalyanpur was readily
available and more than able to fill in the shoes of Lata.

So you have such gems from the Rafi Suman duo like Thahriye hosh me as
loo to chase jaeyega, Tumne pukara aur hum chale aaye from Rajkumar
and many more.
Even though this was the situation with most of the songs there were
some people who had a strong support for Lata Mangeshkar and who were
unwilling to replace her even if it meant replacing the great Mohd Rafi- the
producer of Sangam Raj Kapoor belonged to this group what with Lata
Mangeshkar being the backbone of the music of his films since the super
duper success of his film Barsaat. Lata Mangeshkar had been a part of his
camp ever since not only in the films that Raj Kapoor produced and acted
but also in films outside the Raj Kapoor banner. They gave a series of
memorable hits along with the music director duo of Shankar and Jaikishan
and even though Mohd Rafi gave some memorable songs in Raj Kapoor
films the most notable being the still so fresh “Rammaiya Vastavaiyya”
from Shree 420, Mohd Rafi was never the first choice for Raj Kapoor- his
preferred voice being Mukesh and second choice being Manna Dey.

Shankar Jaikishan were the music directors of Sangam and though they
had used Suman Kalyanpur to go along with Mohd Rafi in films not
involving Raj Kapoor , with Raj Kapoor films it was clear that if there was
to be a duet the first choice would obviously be Lata Mangeshkar and the
male singer had to be someone apart from Mohd Rafi, even if it meant
compromising on the quality. So even though you have Mohd Rafi giving a
lifetime of a rendition for Rajendra Kumar in the form of “Yeh Mera Prem
Patra Padhkar me tum naraaz Na hona” with the icing on the cake being
the lines before the actual song “Meherbaan likhun, haseena likhun ya
dilruba likhun, hairaan hu ke aapko is khat me it's likhun” . This is one of
the most romantic song sung by Mohd Rafi, still when it came to the duet
it had to be Lata Mangeshkar on the heroine and the replacement singer
for the loser Rajendra Kumar in the film Sangam.

So the question is actually not very correct, it should be rephrased as “

Lata Mangeshkar after 2–3 years on realizing that she was on the losing
front instead of Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur was getting the chunk of the
work that should ideally have come to her , made a truce with Mohd Rafi
using her favoring music director Sachin Dev Burman and made it look like
it was Mohd Rafi who initiated the truce. She even made a startling claim a
few years back that Mohd Rafi had sent her an apology letter and after
receiving that she started singing with him again. The media and Shahid
Rafi (son of Mohd Rafi) took her left, right and center over this and asked
her to provide a copy of the letter which she obviously was not able to
provide.
