This is the first day of school for the last district to start the school year. All Region XII middle schools are invited to participate in the Region XII Middle School Bands. Only those students who can commit to the Clinic and Concert on December 8" and 9, 2017 should audition. A student who misses more than 2 hours of rehearsal will be replaced by an alternate. A student who misses rehearsal after 12:00pm on Saturday, December 9", 2017 will not be allowed to perform on the concert. Patches will only be given to the students who perform at the concert. Directors should contact me as soon as possible concerning any conflicts with the Clinic and Concert. The 2017-2018 Region XII Middle School Band Audition will be divided into two zones. The Region XII Middle School Band 1 will be comprised of students from each zone, alternating chairs. The odd chairs will be from Zone 2 (North Zone) and the even chairs will be from the Zone 1 (South Zone). This system will alternate each year. Each Zone will also have a band comprised of students from that zone. The zones were grouped geographically as well as the high school each school feeds. Each Zone should have approximately equal number of students auditioning. Students will also be recognized at the district level with a District Patch. This group will not participate in the Clinic and Concert. AUDITION ENTRY FEE — All schools wishing to participate MUST register online before October 28, 2017, by midnight. If you cannot judge, you MUST find a Region XII Band Director to take your place and pay them yourself if they are not in the region. In addition, please ask the directors at your high school to help as well. In turn, please give your commitment to judge your high school’s district band in November/December. We must help one another in order to keep down the costs involved in hiring outside judges. We will use 5 person panels for all instruments. ALL DIRECTORS LISTED ON YOUR REGISTRATION FORM WILL BE ASSIGNED TO A JUDGING PANEL. PLEASE INDICATE ALL DIRECTORS ON THIS LIST THAT WILL BE ABLE TO JUDGE. AUDITION MUSIC — Copies of the audition etudes are included in this packet. The scales are not, so please download/print them from the Region 12 MS Band web-site at region! 2band.weebly.com. The major scales — Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, G, C, and F Concert — must be played tongued up and slurred down as written. A scale sheet will be provided on the music stand in each audition room at the contest as students will NOT be required to memorize scales. The number of octaves varies according to the instrument. Please refer to the scale sheet and inform your students to play only the number of octaves required for this audition. The chromatic scale must also be played as written, tongued up and slurred down and NOT from memory. In the audition, two of the seven major scales will be picked by a consensus of the judging panel on the day of the audition. The chromatic scale will be mandatory and piayed by all students. The etudes for each instrument are clearly marked. ALL STUDENTS MUST PLAY ALL ETUDES LISTED FOR THEIR INSTRUMENT. IN ADDITION TO SCALES, ALL INSTRUMENTS HAVE TWO ETUDES EXCEPT PERCUSSION. PERCUSSION WILL NOT PLAY SCALES. PERCUSSION WILL ONLY PLAY ONE SNARE, ONE MALLET, AND ONE TIMPANI ETUDE. Each instrument has one lyrical and one technical etude to perform. Please screen your students prior to the audition so that only students that are prepared come to the audition, as to not waste both judges and students time. MUSIC SHOULD NOT BE PASSED OUT UNTIL THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR THE LAST DISTRICT TO BEGIN SCHOOL, WHICH IS MONDAY, AUGUST 28"!!! Please let me know of any erratas as soon as possible so that I may let everyone else know in a timely manner and so we may post on the Region 12 MS Band website.
