A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Summary

Everybody loves a good story about transformation, in which a man sees the light and
give its finally realize what's important in life. And this is one of the most extraordinary stories
of this kind ever written. Considered to be one of the best Christmas stories ever told and
enjoyed each year by millions of people for the holidays, "A Christmas Carol" was originally
published by Charles Dickens himself in 1843.

The protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, is a miserly old and businessman with a morose
personality, stingy and even spiteful towards others. In predominantly, Scrooge is proving
particularly cruel to his loyal employee and to the nephew, who treats without little love and
understanding. He doesn’t celebrate the Christmas because of his solitary life and workaholism.
He had a good friend named Marley. He died seven years ago, which is commemorated on
Christmas Eve. He don’t care about others, even his dedicated employee, Bob Cratchit, only
care about himself.

Scrooge is visited by his nephew, wishing “Merry Christmas”, he invited Scrooge to


spend Christmas Eve with his family, but he despised, saying it was nonsense. Scrooge refused
because he is distant from everyone. His clerk, named Bob Cratchit was working late though it
was Christmas Eve, Scrooge said one day after Christmas would have to come earlier than usual
to replenish the holiday. After a while in Scrooge's office entered the two men who asked him if
he can provide a small amount of money for poor people. Scrooge, who was very stingy,
brutally refused. But everything is about to change. After rejecting the invitation of his
nephew to go to dinner with his family at Christmas, Scrooge is visited by a mysterious spirit
who happens to be his best friend and partner, Jacob Marley, who died at the beginning of the
story and then announces a dark prophecy about the future of the greedy and the arrival of the
three spirits of Christmas. He announced the visit of three ghosts: the Ghost of Christmas Past,
the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Scrooge is not
frightened and defies prediction..
Over time, they are shown three Christmas spirits: the Past, which makes him remember
his childhood and youth, Scrooge life full of melancholy and longing before his addiction to
work, and by their inordinate desire to get rich. Then the Spirit of Christmas Present presented
himself and the people around him and how it can be useful. He also shows an impoverished
family, who are satisfied with what they have. Come to visit him the last spirit of Christmas,
Future , which is death.. He showed people who talking about someone who has died and no one
cared , he realized that he was the one who died and nobody cares. Also the ghost showed him
that the son of Bob Cratchit, his clerk, Tim died.

Each show Scrooge a summary in pictures how to place his life so far, which are the
repercussions of his life. The three ghosts have the role of making Scrooge to reconsider life,
regretted facts and to regain the goodness buried in piles of cash.
