1.0 Air-Cooled Multi Split Units (Variable Refrigerant Flow System)

1.1 GENERAL

Unit shall be Air Cooled, consisting of one outdoor unit and plural indoor units, each
having capability to cool independently of requirements of the rooms.

The system shall be equipped with variable refrigerant volume controller, enable it to
reduce minimum load down to 10% of total with the air of inverter control compressor
(inverter control).

Unit shall be suitable for mix-match connection of Ceiling Cassettes (4 way & 2 way),
Semi-Concealed type, Concealed-Duct type, Ceiling-Mounted type, Wall-Mounted
type, Floor Standing type indoors units as shown on the drawing.

The refrigerant piping shall be extended up to 100m with 50m level differences without
any oil traps,

Both indoor unit and outdoor unit are assembled, tested and charged with refrigerant
R410a at the factory.

1.2 AIR COOLED CONDENSING UNIT

The air cooled condensing unit shall be a factory assembled unit housed in a sturdy
weatherproof casing constructed from rust-proof mild steel panels coated with a baked
enamel finish. The condensing unit shall be designed to operate safely when connected
to multiple indoor units. It is possible to connect indoor units with a capacity of up to
130% of the outdoor unit capacity.

The sound level shall not be more than 59dBA measured horizontally 1m away and 1m
above ground. The condensing unit shall come equipped with two numbers of vertical
scroll compressors (8 and 10 Hp).

The condensing unit shall be modular in design and should be allowed for side by side
installation.

a. COMPRESSOR

The compressor shall be of highly efficient hermetic type vertical scroll


compressors and equipped with Inverter Control capable of changing the
refrigerant volume in accordance to the room load requirement for energy
saving from 25Hz. The system shall be able to connect up the load from 10% to
130% of its normally capacity. Furthermore, by downsizing the inverter the
generation of high frequencies is suppressed. If the non-inverter compressor
should fail, emergency operation is possible using only the inverter compressor.

b. CONDENSER ASSEMBLY

The air cooled condenser shall be constructed with copper tubes mechanically
bonded to aluminium fins to form a cross fins coil. The condenser shall have
large face area to minimize noise give a high EER for heat transfer. Condenser
should be of high performance louver fins and inner grooved tubes design for
high efficiency performance.

c. CONDENSER FAN AND MOTOR

The newly developed 570mm diameter large condenser fan shall be of low noise
level (59dB) type made from pressed out aluminium and dynamically and
statically balanced for minimum noise and vibration. The condenser fan shall be
directly coupled to a induction motor. The condenser fan and motor shall be of
the high efficiency type with minimum power consumption. The fan motor shall
be equipped with tap-change control so that it can be stepped down to low speed
when the requirement is low.

d. REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT

The refrigerant circuit shall include an accumulator, liquid and gas shut off
valves and an electronic expansion valve. All necessary safety operation,
devices should be provided to ensure the safely operation of the system.

e. SAFETY DEVICE

The following safety devices shall be part of the condensing unit

High pressure switch


Fuse
Crankcase heater
Fusible plug
Over current detection circuit for compressor
Thermal protectors for compressor and fan motors
Recycling guard timer
Compressor discharge gas temperature protector
Negative phase protector, defective phase protector
Power supply voltage drop protector
Compressor contactor chattering protector
Power transformer overheating protection
Abnormal high pressure protection

f. PRESSURIZE TESTING

The complete refrigerant circuit should be subjected to a pressure test of 28.0


kg. sq. cm. for at least 24 hours without any drop in pressure.

g. TUBE MATERIAL

The refrigerant tube shall be of de-oxidized phosphorous seamless copper tube


conform to the latest edition of the following standard where applicable :

a) ASHRAE - American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Cond. Eng.

h. OIL RECOVERY SYSTEM

Unit shall be equipped with an oil recovery system to ensure stable operation
with long refrigerant tubing.

1.3 INDOOR UNITS

Each indoor unit shall be equipped with mode selector cooling, dry and fan and a self
diagnosis remote controller and having the features of setting of room temperature (with
digital indicator of room temperature), timer, air discharge direction (for cassette units).
Auto and 3 fan speed selection, self diagnosis circuit with malfunction code display.

The unit shall have adequate external static pressure for connection to ductwork as
shown on the drawings (for concealed duct unit).

a. EVAPORATOR

The evaporator coil shall be constructed from strong clean copper tubes bonded to
aluminium fins suitably spaced to ensure maximum heat transfer. The inlet of coil shall
be factory brazed to an electronic control valve. The face velocity shall be exceptionally
low to ensure quiet operation.The evaporator coil shall be constructed from strong clean

The coil shall be of hi-performance fins and OD 7 mm inner grooved tubes design for
high efficiency performance.

b. ELECTRONIC REFRIGERANT CONTROL VALVE

An electronic expansion valve shall be factory brazed to the inlet of the coil. It shall
modulate the refrigerant volume continuously in respond to load variations of the room.
Thus maintain a precise constant temperature of +-0.5 C.

c. EVAPORATOR FAN

The evaporator fan shall be of the multi-blade type with its performance designed to
match the coil performance. The fan dynamically and statically balanced for minimum
noise and vibration. It shall be directly driven by a 3 speed induction motor.
For concealed duct unit the fan shall be able to cater for the static pressure for
connection to ductwork as shown on the drawings.

The motor shall operate on 220 ~ 240 volts single phase 50Hz.

1.4 CONTROL

The control system should connected by using 2 wire non-polarity multiplex


transmission system link a single outdoor unit to multiplex indoor unit with a 2 core
cable.

The indoor and outdoor units each have communications terminals that allow
connection of as many as 48 units and can be able to group control up to 16 number of
groups to a single communications line (polarity-free twin line main bus).

In addition the control system must come equipped with automatic address setting
function (No manual setting of address is allowed). An automatic checking function for
connections error of wiring and piping must come standard with system.

Computerized control shall be used to maintain a correct room temperature with


minimum power consumption. Unit shall be equipped with automatic fan speed and its
own 3 speed fan controller, 24 hour time graph display, thermostat and LCD indicators.

It shall also be equipped with a self diagnosis circuit for easy and quick maintenance
and service.

a. SOFT START

All condensing units shall be of direct start.

The inverter control compressor shall be able to start at the minimum frequency and
increased to the required frequency (refrigerant volume) according to the actual load
requirement.

A recycling guard timer shall be provided to prevent the compressor to restart again
immediately after it was stopped.

b. CENTRALIZED CONTROL SYSTEM

A centralized control system shall consists of a System Controller and a Weekly Timer.
They shall be provided to control all the functions of the indoor units either together as a
central control system or individually as the specification call for. They must be able to
connect to a Building Management System (BMS).

The function of each controller should be as follows: -

System Controller

It should be able to control up to 16 groups of indoor units. (Maximum 48 indoor units)


and separate the 48 indoor units into multiple zones, moreover each zone can be
controlled individually.

It should be able to function as follows: -


Temperature setting for each fan coil unit of group or zone
Air flow setting for each fan coil unit of group or zone
Fault indication of each fan coil unit of group
It should be able to ON/OFF each individual or zone

It should also have the function to ON or OFF the entire system


Remote Controller less system is available

Weekly Timer

The timer should be able to connected up to 16 groups or 48 nos. Fan Coil Units and it
should have the following functions: -

Program covering a week, in which the operation can be stopped 3 times per day,
can be set.

It must be able to combine with the System Controller and the Remote Controller.

1.5 FAN COIL UNITS

Guide Specification – Fan Coil Units

General

All units shall be delivered completely factory tested. Units must be manufactured in
accordance with International Standards Organisation (ISO) 9000.

Casing

The casing shall be electro-galvanised mild steel (1-2.3 mm gauge) with epoxy
polyester powder coating. Polyethylene insulation shall be provided to the internal sides
of the units.

Fan and Motor

Low noise centrifugal fan shall be used. The fan section must be statically and properly
balanced at the factory to minimise vibration. Automatic or manual airflow swing
adjustment shall be provide for the wall and cassette units.

Coils

The coils shall be configurated aluminium fins bonded to seamless copper tubes. All
coils are to be factory pressure tested. All units shall be furnished complete with a drain
pan of either electro-galvanised mild steel with epoxy polyester powder coating and
polyethylene insulation or polyester construction.

Control Box

The units controls shall be mounted in a box, in a separate compartment in the cabinet.
All controls are prewired and tested at the factory.

1.6 PRE-INSULATED COPPER-GARD PIPE FOR VRV SYSTEM

Pre-insulated Copper Pipe must be fabricated by an approved manufacturer with an ISO


certification and shall have a minimum of 10 years experience in their manufacturing
field.
The manufacturer’s product must comply with the following BS 476 Standard ( BS 476
Part 6, Part 7, and part 20) and supporting documents must be submitted for approval.
Carrier pipe shall be staright length tube, drawn temper Copper Tube to ASTM B280
Table 8.

The insulation must be machine injected polyurethane foam with an overall density of
50 kg/m3 . Below are the properties for the polyurethane foam insulation :-

(a) Thermal Conductivity, K-value : 0.018 Kcal/m.hoC


(b) Overall Density : 50 kg/m3
(c) Blowing agent used : R141b gas (cfc free)

The minimum insulation thickness shall be as follows :-


I. Up to 1-3/8” OD pipe : min. 25mm
II. 1-5/8” OD pipe and above : min. 30mm

The jacket shall be galvanised steel spiral external lockseamed with a minimum
thickness of 0.5mm thick.

Samples must be submitted for approval and manufacturer’s certificate must be


submitted 1 week after delivery of each batch of pipes.
