DESIGN & ANALYSIS OF CIRCULAR RCC WATER TANK

Radius of water tank =5.0m
Height of tank=2.0m
Thickness of side wall of tank =150mm
Height of Tank from GL =8.0m
Beam size = 250 x 250 mm
Column Dia =600mm
No. of supporting column= 18
Concrete grade M30
Steel Fe 415 grade

1.Creation of Geometry :
File  New Project  Select  Space Unit : Length =meters;
Force=KN; File Name=Circular over head water tank  Next 
Select  Open Structure Wizard  Finish.
Change to Frame Model from Truss models  Select Reverse Cylindrical Frame
and double click on it.

Length = 10m Radius =5.0m
Angle =360º
No. of Bays along length= 3 Bay 1=4.0m Bay 2=4.0m Bay 3=2.0m
No. of Bays along periphery =18
 Apply  Transfer model  Ok.

Front view  Select bottom portion of tank New view Plan (top) view .
Geometry Add beam. Connect two opposite end of nodes to join as the dia of
circle  Right click Insert node  Add mid point Ok. Select the mid point of
node  Right click  Copy Paste Y=0.5m Ok.

Isometric view Delete the dia of circle (beam) created Ok. Click Add beam icon
Connect nodes on one end of circle to the node created  Select the beam
Right click Insert node n=5Ok. Copy the slanting beam 
Geometry  3D Circular Repeat  Axis of Rotation  Y Total angle =360º
No. of steps = 18 Check □ Link steps Check □ open base  Ok.

Top view Select all beams in top inner circle DeleteOk.
Select surface meshing icon and select the outer portion of circular tank and start
connecting any of the nodes in the circle till connecting the end of nodes along
periphery of circle with surface meshing Grid floor A meshing screen will
appear. Changed division column as 1 in all column in the table and press Ok.

Select all beams with plate cursor icon.


Select top view  Select beam portion except outer circle Delete Ok. Only
plates are remaining.

2. Member Properties :
Click General  Define  Circle YD=0.60m (For column) Add. Rectangle
YD=0.25m ZD=0.25m (For beams) Add. Thickness Node 1 to 4 =0.15m (Tank
side wall alround) AddClose.
Front view  Highlight YD=0.60m and Select all columns vertical below tank
portion   Assign to selected beam Assign  Yes.

High light Beam 0.25 x 0.25 and Select top and middle beam portion  Assign to
selected beam  Assign  Yes.

Highlight Thickness 0.15m and select plate cursor and select  Assign to view
Assign  Yes Close. De select the member.

3.Supports :
Click SupportCreate Fixed Add Click support 2 and select bottom support 
 Assign to selected node AssignYes  Close.
De select the nodes and change to beam cursor.

4. Loading :
Click Load and Definition  Load case details  Add.
Number 1. Loading Type: Dead.
Title: DL  Add.
Click Load case 1  Add. 
Self weight  Selfweight Y Factor =-1   GY Add.
Side wall of tank:
Click plate loads  Hydrostatic Select view  Select all the circular top side
plate using plate cursor  Done.

Click plate loads  Pressure on full plate  Pressure W=-20 KN/m2

Local Z  GY Add. High light W=-20 and Select Bottom portion of tank using

plate cursor   Assign to selected plates AssignYes .

5. Design:
Click DesignConcrete  Current code IS 456Define Parameters
Fc=30,000KN/m2 Add. Fymain=415,000KN/m2 Add.
Fysec=415,000KN/m2 Add.
Click CommandDesign slab elements Add. Design Beams Add.

Design columns Add  Take offAddClose.

Click Fck=30,000KN/m2 and select the entire structure using geometric

cursor  Assign to selected beam Assign Yes.

Click Fymain=415000KN/m2 and select the entire structure  Assign

to selected beam Assign Yes.

Click Fysec=415000KN/m2 and select the entire structure  Assign to

selected beam Assign Yes.

Highlight slab elements design and select the top portion of side wall of

tank using plate cursor   Assign to selected plate  Assign Yes.

Highlight Design Beams Select all the beam  Assign to selected

6. Analysis Type:

7. Perform Analysis:

From Main Menu  Commands  Run Analysis  Go to post processing mode 

Done.

8. Results:

 Go to post processing mode.


Click deflection and see the deflection Diagram.
