The direct method

The direct method was an answer to the dissatisfaction with the older grammar
translation method, which teaches students grammar and vocabulary through direct
translations and thus focuses on the written language.

The direct method of teaching, which is sometimes called the natural method, and is
often used in teaching foreign languages, refrains from using the learners' native
language and uses only the target language. It is a method of teaching language
directly establishing a direct or immediate association between experience and
expression, between the English word, phrase or idiom and its meaning through
demonstration, dramatization without the use of the mother tongue.

The main objective is to impart a perfect command of a foreign language. The main
focus being to make the learner think in the targeted language in the same manner as
the learning of his/her mother-tongue in the most natural way.

In general, teaching focuses on the development of oral skills. Characteristic features

of the direct method are:

 Teaching concepts and vocabulary, real-life objects and other visual materials.

 Teaching grammar by using an inductive approach.

 Centrality of spoken language (including a native-like pronunciation).

 Focus on question-answer patterns.

Benefits

One of its positive points is that it promises to teach the language and Not about the
language. More benefits can be listed as follows:

 It is a natural method which teaches language the same way the mother tongue
is acquired. Only the target language is used and the learning is contextulized.
 Its emphasis on speech made it more attractive for those who have needs of
real communication in the target language.
 It was one of the first methods to introduce the teaching of vocabulary through
real.

Direct method allows students build a direct relation between experience and
language.
Explanation

The direct method is focused on the student's practice, since the aim is to acquire the
foreign language in a similar way as the mother tongue is learned, that is, as the
students learned their language from a young age only by listening to the people of
around and practicing. This whole process occurs in a natural way as they learn to
communicate in their language without the need for a class. With this method we
want to encourage active student participation through dynamic classes that allow
interaction between students and teachers.

Also the objective of this method is that students learn the language to communicate
and that they may be able to acquire new knowledge or vocabulary through
association is to say that the teacher tries to teach based on the association of
concepts with the object for a better assimilation which greatly favors learning the
foreign language in a faster, more practical and effective way.

How to apply it in class?

Providing the student with a series of images can be movies or tales, the images have
to have different and relative actions so that the student becomes easier to create and
tell a story. This allows the student to learn a language in a fun, interactive and
practical way. It also
gives them the opportunity to associate story with reality facilitating the student to
obtain a natural language allowing better communication and interaction.

Another technique that can be used in classrooms is reading in high voice where
students read a paragraph of a determined topic each one, then the teacher can ask
about what they understood about it, it allows the student to develop his analytical
thinking in the language that is acquiring, while the teachers allows them to help them
in the pronunciation of some words.
