Paper, Font, and Layout


A. Paper size and margins
Term paper: 1 ¼ inches both sides, 1 inch above and below
Theses for binding: same format but increase left margin to 1 ½ inches
B. Font size and type
Font size: Title on front page- 20 pts, boldface
Chapter heads- 16 pts, boldface
Chapter Subheads- 16 pts
Normal/Body text- 11/12 pts
Super- and subscripts- 9-10 pts
Indented quotations- 10 pts
Footnote reference numbers- 8 pts
Footnote text- 9-10 pts
Font type: serif typeface
C. Front matter
a. Introductory material format: title page containing the full title of the work, the author,
the date of submission
Example: A [paper/thesis/dissertation] submitted to the
University of the Philippines School of Economics
In partial fulfillment of the requirements for
[Econ 199/the degree of Master of Arts in Economics]
b. An abstract on a separate page
c. A signed waiver on a separate page that reads as follows:
Relevant portions of this work may be quoted and used for research and other
scholarly purposes, provided the proper citation is made.
d. A table of contents
e. A list of figures and tables, if relevant
f. acknowledgements page is OPTIONAL and may be placed between the abstract and the
waiver
D. Chapter heads and subheads
Chapter heads: I, II, III, so on. These should be centered at the top of the page, followed
by the title of the chapter on a separate line
Subheads: 1, 2, 3, and so on. Write the subhead text flush left on the same line
Sub-subheads: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, and so on. Write the text flush left on the same line
E. Text and headings
Avoid situations where the numeral for a superior heading is followed immediately by a
numeral for a subheading. Text must always introduce the next set of headings.

F. Paragraph spacing
Spacing on paragraph of body text: 1 ½ lines
Paragraphs should be separated by two lines of space.
G. No indentation
The increased line-spacing between paragraphs is sufficient to mark off one paragraph
from another, thus eliminating the reason for indenting the first line of each paragraph
H. Displayed equations
Displayed equations must be indented one tab-stop (1/2 in) form the left margin. But if
the text and the equations belng to the same paragraphs, the spacing is consistently one-
and-a-half lines
