LANGUAGES
The Russian language is a Slavic
language whose origins go back IN THE WORLD
over 1000 years ago. The sixth
century AD saw the migration of
the Slavic peoples of the territo-
ry that today occupies Poland.
The Slavs expanded westward
to the Elbe River and south to
the Adriatic Sea, where they
gradually occupied much of
what is now the Balkans. By the
tenth century, three groups of
Slavic languages had emerged:
Western, Southern and Eastern.
Eastern Slavic gave rise to mod-
ern languages known as Ukrain-
ian, Belarusian and Russian.
