Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course the learner will be able to:
1. Apply the nursing process to promote optimal mental health wellness based on
neurobiological, psychoanalytic, cognitive and behavioral theories.
2. Provide patient-centered care for patients within their environments and across the
life span based on an assessment of biological, psychological, and socio-cultural
factors.
3. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills in caring for patients with acute
mental health alterations and vulnerabilities.

4. Advocate for high quality, safe and culturally appropriate care for patients with
mental health alterations and vulnerabilities.
5. Collaborate effectively with the patient and inter-professional healthcare team to

factors that impact access and delivery of mental health services.
7. Demonstrate moral/ethical caring for patients experiencing mental health

CLINICAL GRADING
The clinical portion of this course is graded on Pass/Fail basis. You must achieve a
passing grade in clinical to pass the course. Clinical instructors will assess the student’s
demonstration of competencies in the following based on the …

2. Client Assessment/Planning Nursing Care
3. Implementation of Care
4. Therapeutic Interaction
5. Professional Accountability
faculty will determine if the reason is valid. If a make-up exam is required, the
Course Coordinator reserves the right to change the format of any make-up exams.
No extra credit is available for this course.
Clinical Requirements:
Dosage Calculation Test: If you did not pass the Dosage Calculation test at the end of
A & E – I, you are required to successfully complete the dosage calculation test (grade
90% or above) by the second week of the semester.
Students must meet the clinical objectives as listed on the Clinical Evaluation Tool
(separate document) in order to pass the clinical component of the course.
Students are expected to attend clinical, both on and off campus, on time and
appropriately attired. Dress Code includes: Modest Business Attire e.g. skirts, dress
slacks, suits with NYU Name Pin. It would be helpful to you to have pockets to carry
your valuables while working due to limited space on the units. Some clinical sites
may require the NYU purple scrubs, please follow the instructions of your clinical
instructor.
Completion of 2 reflective journal entries for off campus clinical is required. Please see
the format listed under Assignments. These journals are meant to be reflective of your
clinical experiences. Please submit to the off campus clinical instructor as directed by the
individual instructor.
Smart Recovery Reaction Paper is due 2/10/18 by 11:59pm. Please post this paper in
the appropriate place under Assignments on NYU Courses.
***Absences from on and off campus clinical must be reported by e-mail to the clinical
instructor, course coordinator, faculty associate and Ilene Rattner prior to the start of the
clinical experience. Please refer to the undergraduate NYUCN Clinical Absenteeism
Policies, which can be found under resources for this class
NOTE: In addition, students must also complete the electronic clinical absence
notification form (link: https://frms.nursing.nyu.edu/user/login?destination=node/197)
for every missed on/off clinical within 24 hours of the date of missed clinical. Those
students who anticipate missing a clinical(s) because of religious observance must also
complete the electronic clinical absence notification form during the first week of the
academic term.

Access Code will be provided by the faculty via email and will be reviewed during the first
week of class. Please note – thePoint website is the same site you used in Pathophys.
2. From the “My Content” page, click on vSim for Nursing | Mental Health.
3. On the welcome screen or from “My Classes”, select “Join a Class”, enter your CLASS
CODE: 45A91A3B, and click “Enroll”.
4. We encourage you watch the vSim tutorial available as part of the student resources on
thePoint. This will help you understand how to best navigate vSim.
