HISTORY
• Badminton has its origins in ancient civilisations in Europe
and Asia. The ancient game known as battledore and
shuttlecock probably originated more than 2000 years ago.

• In the 1600s battledore and shuttlecock was an upper class

pastime in England and many European countries. It was
simply two people hitting a shuttlecock backwards and
forwards with a simple bat as many times as they could
without allowing it to hit the ground.

• Modern badminton can be traced to mid-19th century

British India. It was created by British military officers
stationed there. By this time, a net was added to the game.
GENERAL RULES
• TOSS
A toss shall be conducted before a game starts. If you win, you can choose
between serving first or to start play at either end of the court. Your
opponent can then exercise the remaining choice.
• SCORING SYSTEM
The rules of badminton states that a badminton match shall consist of the
best of 3 games. In doubles and men's singles, the first side to score 15 points
wins the game. In women's singles, the first side to score 11 points wins the
game. The side who wins a game serves first in the next game.
• CHANGE OF ENDS
You have to change ends with your opponent after finishing the first game. If
a third game was to be played, you shall change ends when the leading score
reaches 6 in a game of 11 points or 8 in a game of 15 points.
EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS
• Badminton Racket
Badminton rackets can be made from several types of materials. Depending on the
material selection, this can result in different combinations of racket weight, balance
points and string tensions.
• Shuttlecock
There are two types of shuttlecocks: plastic and feathered shuttlecocks. The plastic
ones are far more durable compared to the feathered types which are commonly
used. However, plastic shuttlecocks are only recommended for beginners who are just
starting out.
• Net
The net plays an important role in badminton matches. An official badminton net must
measure 5 feet high in the center, and 5 feet, 1 inch at the sides. The net attaches to
vertical posts on either side of the court.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
• Defensive High Clear/lob
Lobbing is mainly used as a defensive shot. When you’re out of
position, hit the high clear to ‘buy’ yourself time to recover.
• Drop Shots
Make sure you have a variation of shots in your games. Drop shots are
perfect to variate the pace of the rally.

• Smashing
Rallies are often put away with the smash. It is the most powerful shot
in badminton.
• Net Play
Dominate the front area of the court by having good net playing skills.
Learn techniques such as the tumbling net shot, net kill, and net lift.

TACTICS
• Movement pressure
By forcing your opponent to move quickly about the court, you
create situations where he will reach the shuttlecock late and
have difficulty playing an effective shot.

• Attacking in doubles
It involves hitting the shuttlecock downwards, especially with net
kills and smashes. These two shots are the most common
winning shots.
OLYMPICS

• According to the Badminton World Federation, badminton became an official

Olypic sport in 1992 at the Olympic games in Barcelona. It includes singles games,
all-female doubles games, all-male doubles games, and mixed doubles games
consisting of both men and women.

• The games are single-elimination. A match is the best of three games. All games
are played to 21 points with rally scoring. A team must win by 2 points, so if the
score becomes 20-all, the game becomes the first to 22. This pattern continues
until the score is 29-all, and then the winner is the first team to 30 points.
SPAIN
• Badminton appeared in Spain in 1971 because
of a group of friends from Lugo. Since then,
this sport has been increasingly practised.
• One well-known Spanish badminton player is
Carolina Marín who won at Olympics 2016.
