Lab. No. 1 – Tension Members
Monsi Sekulovic, Kawsar Ahmed, Metro Hrabok 15 September 2010.

Problem No. 1
(20 marks)
(a) W24x176 (W610x262) beam has one side of the bottom flange “blanked” (cut off)
as shown below in Figure 1.
Calculate the principal values of “moments of inertia” and “radii of gyration” for
this altered cross-section. Do your calculations in metric units. Ignore the fillets.
(b) Show the weakest orientation-of-axes (Y’-Y’) on a Mohr circle for the cross-
section and calculate and indicate the angle-of-rotation from the X-X axis to the
X’-X’ principal axis. Origin of all axes is at the centroid of the cross-section.
(c) use SAP2000 “section designer” under Define Section Properties
Frame Sections Add New Property Other to check your answers.

Problem No. 2
(15 marks)
The long leg of an L- 203 x 102 x 13 (L- 8 x4 x ½ , page 6-72) is connected to a gusset
plate by two rows of bolts as shown in Figure 2. Steel is A-36 (page 6-5).
a) without considering bending effects, determine the maximum tensile force Tr which the
L can support. Holes are punched for M22 bolts, using standard gauges (page 6-168,
CISC Handbook), and standard hole diameters according to Clause 22.3.5.1.

b) do not check Clause 13.11 (“tension-&-shear block” failure) for this problem, but
sketch the “block shear” failure modes which you would consider as a designer.

Problem No. 3
(15 marks)
Referring to Figure 3, this is the “self-help” problem in the class notes on “Tension-&-
Shear Block Failures/ Tear Outs”. It is taken from the CISC Handbook “Design
Example – Shear Lag” pages 3-100, to 3-103.
Repeat only the calculations pertaining to Clause 13.2, and Clause 13.11 to more fully
understand the relevant failure mechanisms and become acquainted with example
problems in the Handbook. Utilize the handout from the Class Notes.
Holes are drilled.

Problem No. 4
(30 marks)
The lap-joint shown in Figure 4 is made from two 20 mm thick plates lapped as shown.
The steel is G40.21-M-350W steel (page 6-7 of the Handbook). The holes are punched
for ¾” fasteners (bolts); use hole diameters according to Clause 22.3.5.1.
a) What is the factored tensile resistance Tr of the member according to Clause 13.2 ?
b) Draw sketches of possible “block shear” failures modes for this bolted member in order
to calculate the factored tensile resistance Tr of the member according to Clause 13.11
do the calculations for only one “block shear” mechanism which you think is critical.

Problem No. 5
(20 marks)
The tension member shown in Figure 5 is a WT 180x73.5 (page 6-88) and connected by
four 22mm bolts to a gusset plate as shown in Figure 5. Verify that “end” and “edge”
distances meet Standard S16-09 requirements (Clause 22.3 and Table 6), and that
standard gauges have been used (page 6-168). Holes are drilled.
The steel is structural but of unidentified origin (Clause 5.2.2). What is the maximum
factored tension load Tf which this WT member can carry according to CSA S16-09?
