I Sessional Examination (February 2018)

Semester : IV Subject Code : ME208B Subject: Fluid Machines

Course : B.TECH Branch : ME

Time: 2 Hours Max. Marks: 30

Instructions to the Students:
The student is required to read the question paper very carefully.
Do not write anything on your question paper except Roll No.
Using mobile phones, possessing any kind of written material, argument with the invigilator or discussing anything with your co-student will lead to the
cancellation of your paper without warning.

Attempt any five questions. Q.1 is compulsory.

1 Explain the following (6marks)

a) Define impulse momentum theorem.
b) Write the mass density and weight density of water with SI units.
c) Write the differences between impulse and reaction turbines.
d) Write some practical applications of impulse momentum theorem.

2 a) A jet of water moving at 12 m/s impinges on a concave cane shaped to defect the jet through 120 degrees when
stationary. If the vane is moving at 5 m/s, find the angle of the jet. What are the absolute velocity of the jet at exit
in magnitude and direction and the work done of water? . (4marks)
b) Draw a neat sketch of hydraulic dam and show the installation of turbine. (2marks)

3 a) Derive relation for force exerted by the jet on a flat moving plate. (3marks)
b) Draw a neat sketch of spear nozzle and explain its functions.(3marks)

4 a) A pelton wheel turbine develops 10 MW under a net head of 140 m at a speed of 250 rpm. Assuming the
coefficient of velocity for the nozzle as 0.99, hydraulic efficiency as 89 %, speed ratio as 0.45and jet diameter to
wheel diameter ratio as 1/9, determine, (a) the discharge required, (b) the diameter of the wheel, (c) the diameter
and the number of the jets required and (d) the specific speed. (3marks)
b) Write in detail, the component parts, construction and working of pelton wheel turbine.(3marks)

5 Derive an expression for maximum hydraulic efficiency for a Pelton wheel turbine. (6marks)

6 A jet of water moving at 12 m/s impinges on a concave shaped vane to deflect the jet through 120
degrees when stationary. The vane is moving at 5 m/s. Find:-
a) The angle of the jet so that there is no shock at the inlet. (3 marks)
b) The absolute velocity of the jet at exit both in magnitude and direction.(3 marks)
