Comparative form of adjectives

When we compare things, people or even ideas we look at what makes them different from each
other.
Comparative adjectives are used to show what quality one thing has more or less than the other.
They normally come before any other adjectives.
For example:
 Your son is braver than mine.
 Carla’s flat is lighter than yours.
 She’s twice as pleasant as her sister.
 Gold is more valuable than silver

How can we forming the comparative?

When comparing with as .. as, the adjective does not change. When comparing with than,
however, some changes are necessary, depending on the number of syllables the adjective has:

1-syllable adjectives: add -er to the adjective

e.g He’s stronger at football than I am.

If the word ends with consonant-vowel-consonant, the last consonant is usually doubled in the
comparative, like bigger (big), hotter (hot), fatter (fat).

2-syllable adjectives ending in -y: change the -y to –ier

e.g Today I’m merrier than yesterday.

When we have 2-syllable adverbs ending in -y must be compared with the word more, like quickly
 more quickly and NOT quicklier

Other 2 or more syllables adjectives: use more with the unchanged adjective

e.g The shop is more crowded.

The comparative of some shorter 2-syllable adjectives can be formed with –er, like simple-simpler,
clever-cleverer, narrow-narrower.

BE CAREFUL! For every rule, there is at least one exception and there are some adjectives have
different forms of comparatives:

 Good/well – better
 bad – worse
 little – less
 much (many) – more
 far – further

Finally, another common mistake is writing "then" instead of "than” so pay attention!
