According to the Gleaner child abuse is any act, or failure to act, on the part of a parent or

caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or
exploitation of a child. Child abuse has great impact on a child’s life. It damages a child self
esteem, their ability to have steady relationships and ability to function at home, at work and
even school. What causes a parent to abuse their own child? Does domestic abuse contribute to
child abuse?

“Poverty/Ignorance is at the root of the problem”, stated the gleaner. Having a lot of
children and not being able to provide for them can be stressful. Especially when they begin to
request their wants and needs that is needed to be fulfilled. As a parent being in financial debt
causes a great problem not only for them but the family and not knowing how to evaluate the
problem causes some parents in some cases to channel their sentiments on the child whether
physically, verbally or emotionally. In other cases, disadvantaging socio-economic
circumstances may operate a acute or chronic factors, including their impact on parents own
childhoods. Living in deep poverty is in itself a violation of rights and it enormously increases
the vulnerability of children to abuse and neglect.

There are sources of chronic situation IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) that may put the
children at considerable risk, including anger management problems and substance abuse. If it is
a case where either one of the parent or both of them to violence when he or she gets upset then
the child being abused is a possibility. According to Pip Magazine, for some adults, this problem
with anger and violence is related to substance abuse. This is probably the type of violence
associated with the parent’s relationship that puts children most at risk of abuse. Studies have
shown that each year the rate of child abuse is increasing and is a global problem that needs
fixing.

In Conclusion, child abuse is not only a local problem but international as well. Children
may experience abuse because of problems associated with their families especially the parents.
Having an unhealthy relationship is a factor or barrier that links to child abuse. Let us not forget
that substance abuse, poverty even anger management are some of the causes of child neglect or
child abuse and evaluating these problems can put an end to child abuse
