DNA TRANSCRIPTION IN NUCLEUS

Instructions:

Complete the three following tasks to transcribe your initial code, number, or
word into something that a ribosome can understand. Write each code onto a separate
sheet of paper with the number 1, 2, and 3 at the top. Pass it to the Ribosome as you
complete each!

1. DNA code: ACC ATG CAT AGC TAA GAT CCT AGG
Decode by changing:
A➨U
C➨G
G➨C
T➨A
(this is how it works in real life!)

-----Write the first code for translation on a NEW piece of paper-----

2. How many seconds are in 3.6 hours? (a typical EDPB class length)
HINT: How many minutes in an hour? Seconds in a minute? Will your number of
seconds be bigger or smaller than your number of hours?
Next use this table to convert your number into the 2nd code for translation.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

AAU AUG GGC GGA AGC GUU UAU ACC CAG GAC

-----Write the second code for translation on a NEW piece of paper.------

3. Solve the following trivia question and use the table below to convert your answer
into the third code for translation.

“What drug was accidentally discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928?”

a e i m n b c l p n

AAA AAC CCC GGG UGA GUC ACG AGG GCA CGA

-----Write the third code for translation on a NEW piece of paper.-----

TRANSLATION IN RIBOSOME

Instructions:
Use the following chart and the codes you made during transcription to build a
sentence using words. In real life, the code is read by the ribosome to build a protein
using amino acids.

Write each sentence underneath the

code from the nucleus

PROTEIN FOLDING IN ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

As the Endoplasmic Reticulum you are responsible for taking the polypeptide
(sentence) given to you by the Ribosome and folding it into the correct protein. Then
you give your folded protein to the Golgi Body.

Instructions:

If your phrase has the keyword “Handsome” fold your protein in the shape of a
Basic Dart.

If your phrase has the keyword “Fantastic” fold your protein in the shape of a
Stable Plane.

If your phrase has the keyword “Science” fold your protein in the shape of a
Crumpled Paper Ball.
PROTEIN TRANSPORT IN GOLGI BODY

As the Golgi Body you are responsible for taking the folded protein given to you by the
Endoplasmic Reticulum and send it to the correct destination.

YOU MUST THROW YOUR PROTEIN FROM THE DESIGNATED

THROWING AREA.
Instructions:

If you are given the Basic Dart protein, you are to secrete it out of the cell.
Throw it so that it hits the projector screen to the right of the whiteboard (cell
membrane)

If you are given the Crumbled paper ball protein, you are to send it to a very specific
part of the cell.
Throw it from the designated throwing area to the recycle bin.

If you are given the The Stable protein, you are to send it back to the nucleus.
Throw it so that is lands behind the desk to the right of the white board.
