corto.
ABSTRACT
The objective of this article is to investigate the velocities of the seismic waves,
as well as to know the formulas for their calculation. For which it was taken five
Reference books to carry out the investigation. The different seismic waves have been
classified into two groups, internal waves (primary and secondary) and superficial
waves (Rayleigh and Love).
The velocity of the surface waves is less than the velocity of the internal waves, but it
can also be mentioned that the velocity of the secondary waves is lower than the
primaries. The velocity of seismic waves depends on the density and elasticity of the
materials they traverse. Seismic waves travel faster in rigid materials, which return
elastically to their original forms when the effort caused by a seismic wave ceases.
The superficial waves radiate from the epicenter at a speed of about 4 km/s and with an
amplitude that in theory is inversely proportional to the distance from the epicenter. The
primary waves usually travel at a speed 1.73 times more than that of the secondary
waves, for that reason they do not produce any destruction, which does not happen with
the secondary waves that are those that cause damage in structures that is to say the
speed of Propagation of long-period waves is higher than those of the short period.

(Bolt,
