The earth is a huge bio-diversified system of living organisms and abiotic
factors. All the organisms are equally important to the ecosystem that the
earth include. But the issue here is with the most important and vital
ecosystem that includes human beings and plants. Tree and humans are
dependent on each other. The tree purifies the air for human respiration.
But some disturbance in air could affect the human beings. This can
be verified by carrying out a set of experiments. The study mainly
confines to one of the major issue of cigarette smoke. The result from the
observation clarifies that smoke form the cigarette is harmful and
hazardous to both plant and human.
The substances are also carcinogenic to humans. The aim of the study
of “THE EFFECT OF SMOKE IN PLANT GROWTH”
is to show that the smoke of cigarettes is harmful to plants and so is
harmful to humans.
It is to signify the disadvantages of cigarette smoke. To make aware of
the diseases caused due to cigarette smoke. To aware of the harm it
causes to a person who is regularly exposed to it. And finally, to advise to
avoid cigarette smoke in any sense.
I take this opportunity to express my profound sense of
gratitude and respect to all those who helped me
throughout this venture.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our Biology

teacher Mr. Atanu Maji for his constant guidance, motivation,
moral encouragement and sympathetic attitude towards the
success of this project.
I also want to thank the principal and the institution for
providing the necessary materials.
My sincere thanks also goes to my classmate for giving
me the idea about the project. He enacted a special role in
my project.
Last but not the least, I would like to thank my
family: my parents for giving birth to me at the first
place and supporting me spiritually throughout my
life. And also a special thanks to support me in my
project.
This is to certify that Syed Tannaz and
MD. Sharif of class XII has prepared
this report on the project titled “Effect of
Smoke on Plant Growth” in accordance
with the guidelines given by Central Board
of Secondary Education. The report is
found worthy of acceptance as final project
report for Biology of class XII during the
academic year 2017-18

To beautify our surroundings and breathe a little easier, we usually
include several living plants in our home and work spaces. Plants are
beautiful and work as air cleaners and make our indoor environments
more pleasant for living and working.
While plants cleanup the air, remove carbon dioxide and produce
oxygen, they may also be subject to harmful effects of some pollutants such
as cigarette smoke. Although there are a lot of reasons such as pollution
due to water, noise, soil for which the plant shows harmful effect. But
our study mainly confines to the one caused by cigarette.

Project Description:
In this project we will perform a set experiments to test the effect of
cigarette smoke on the growth of plants. To ensure that all plants that we
test are identical, we start by planting some seeds and expose seedlings or
young plants to smoke.
We confer our results by distinguishing the normal behavior of the plant
to the one exposed to smoke.
To determine whether different types
of smoke gives a positive or negative
effect on plants :-
✓ To determine the effect of cigarette
smoke on plants
✓ To determine the effect of mosquito coil
smoke on plants
✓ To infer the harm caused by the smokes
by distinguishing it from normal plant, by
making observation table and noting the
change in plant time to time.
In progress to our project we have
these major steps
 First we took some pea (Pisum sativum) seeds and put it in water for
germination.
 After that we planted 3 well germinated seeds in separate earthen pots.
 When the plants grown well up to a height of 5cm we started our
observation.
 Out of the three plants one was exposed to cigarette smoke, another one
was exposed to smoke of mosquito coil, while the third one was exposed to
normal atmosphere.
 We put the plants to exposure 30 min every day at noon and put them
to normal condition the rest of the time.
 We note all our observation by making an observation table, specially the
height, leaf color, texture etc.
 Based on our observation we distinguish between the normal plant and
the plants exposed to smoke
 After our careful observation we then infer the effect of the smokes on the
plants.
 We then reached to the conclusion based on the result we made from the
observations.
In progress of our project we collected information
through different books, internet newspaper and other
sources. This gave us a pre-determined aim to our
observation of the project.

Plants can be made to take up the gas from smokes by

creating a gas chamber with suitable outlet and burning the
coil or cigarette in the chamber. The gases are then forcefully
absorbed by the pants to show the desired effects.
Smokes of cigarette releases harmful and poisonous gases to
the air like carbon monoxide, tar, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic,
DDT that interfere and disturbs the process of photosynthesis,
respiration and nutritional uptake. This causes a major
change in the behavior and appearance of the plant. The
contents of mosquito coil however are less dangerous.
Due to absorption of these gases the plant growth rate
decreases. The plant leaves appear yellowish and look like
dead leaves. The stack generally loses strength to hold the leaf
straight.

On the basis of our experiment and observation we noticed that

due to smoke, the Palnt B and Plant C have less growth
than Palnt A. Among all Plants C suffers least growth.
Cigarette smoke and smoke of mosquito coil both affected
the plant growth. Among them the effect of cigarette smoke
is more hazardous. The content of cigarette i.e. tar, carbon
mono oxide, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, DDT and others
affected the growth of the plant (Plant C) more than the
smoke of mosquito coil which contained prallethrin and
household insecticide.
Carbon monoxide and tar interferes in the respiration and
photosynthesis of the plants. Hence the normal growth of
the plant gets disturbed
We can easily infer from our observations that the effect
of cigarette is not only limited to plant but it is also
dangerous for humans. It contains some poisonous gases
that are carcinogenic (cancer-causing) and fatal. Any one
exposed to the smoke of cigarette regularly can acquire
cancer and lung diseases.
