Organization of the Report

The body of the research project contains five main chapters. These are:

 Chapter 1 - Introduction
 Chapter 2 - Review of Related Literature and Studies
 Chapter 3 - Technical Background
 Chapter 4 - Methodology, Results and Discussion
 Chapter 5 – Conclusion and Recommendations

 Chapter 1 - Introduction

The introduction should give information as to what the research is all about. It should
introduce the reader to the origin of the research topic. The introduction is the key to put the
research study into perspective or context. Chapter 1 consists of the following:
 Project Context
 Purpose and Description of the Project
 Objectives of the Project
 Scope and Limitations of the Project
 Significance of the Project

Project context

Begin this section by setting the context for the research through a historical
background of the project. The purpose of this section is to provide information on how the
problem arose and evolved.
The researcher should give strong justification for selecting such research problem in
his/her capacity as a researcher. Being part of the organization or systems and the desire and
concern to improve the systems.

Purpose and description of the project

The purpose and description of the project should answer the following questions:
 What is the function of your project?
 What is good in your project?
 What makes your project unique, innovative, and relevant?
Objectives of the project

This section states the over-all goal that must be achieved to answer the problem.

Specific objectives
This subsection is an elaboration of the general objective. It states the specific steps
that must be undertaken to accomplish the general objective.

 These objectives must be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-

bounded.
 Each specific objective may start with “to design/survey/review/analyze…”
Studying a particular programming language or development tool (e.g., to study
Windows/Object- Oriented/Graphics/C++ programming) to accomplish the general
objective is inherent in all project paper and, therefore, must not be included here.

Scope and limitations of the project

The scope and limitations of the project describe in general what the research is
supposed to do. This section discusses the boundaries (with respect to the objectives) of the
project and the constraints within which the research will be developed.

Scope of the project

 The scope refers to the work that needs to be accomplished to deliver a product,
service, or result with the specified features and functions.
 The scope explains the nature, coverage, and the time frame of the study.
 The scope of the project gives an overview of all the deliverables (i.e. the things
that the project gives/ delivers), the tools and technologies used that will be used
in the project development, the location of the study, and the participants.

Limitations of the project

 Limitation explains all that are not included in the project, the boundaries of the
project (i.e. area/ things that are out of scope).

Significance of the project

Significance of the project is a part where researcher will tell the importance and
purpose of the project. This part will tell how the project would be beneficial to society,
specific groups or individual.

 Describe the significance of the project the specific context of the department,
university and the community as well. (Who will benefit from the study?)
 This section explains why project must be done.
 Focus on the projects contribution to the field of Information Technology.
 Chapter 2 - Review of related literature and studies

The review of the related literature and studies is one of the components of a research
process. The researcher needs to review the write-ups, readings, and studies related to the present
project.

 The purpose of this section is to tell what the project has or has not been done on the project,
it explains or clarifies the theoretical rationale of the project. It provides general picture of
the research project.
 Only research literatures which are related in purpose, method, or findings to the current
project should be included in the review. The discussion should be in the form of a brief
critical analysis of the purpose, method of the study, principal findings, and conclusions.
 The review clarifies the interrelationship of the literature reviewed. Points out weaknesses
and strengths of each study.
 The section explains how the literature was reviewed in relation to the project. Summarize
the review and provide a transition from the past studies to the present ones.
 Includes a synthesis of relevant scholarly literature. In most cases, it will also include a
discussion of theory or a conceptual framework.
 Citations will adhere to APA format.

Chapter 3 – Technical background

 This section discusses and presents the overview of the current technologies (hardware/
software/ network) used in the system.
 Technicality of the project
 Details of the technologies to be used
 How the project will work
Publication Formatting Requirements

Format and Styles

This section describes the desired format and appearance of the capstone project.

Format and styles divisions

 Each chapter should begin on new pages.

 Begin typing the chapter heading 2 lines from the top. Type “Chapter # ” in upper and
lower case letters and centered. Double space and type the title of the chapter, centered and
in capital letters.

Styles
 APA Style 6th edition, Washington, D.C.

APA Style uses a unique headings system to separate and classify paper sections. There are
5 heading levels in APA. The 6th edition of the APA manual revises and simplifies previous heading
guidelines. Regardless of the number of levels, always use the headings in order, beginning with level 1.
The format of each level is illustrated below:

APA Headings
Level Format
1 Centered, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Headings
2 Left-aligned, Boldface, Uppercase and Lowercase Heading
3 Indented, boldface, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.
4 Indented, boldface, italicized, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.
5 Indented, italicized, lowercase heading with a period. Begin body text after the period.
Example 5 heading levels in APA

APA style allows various levels of headings for denoting different sections of a paper.

From highest-level to lowest:

Level One Heading

According to the APA style guide, 6th edition, a level one heading is centered, boldface,

and has uppercase and lowercase letters. Different level headings are used to clarify organization

of the paper. Not all levels of headings are needed. A Level One Heading should be the main

sections of the paper (e.g., Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Findings, and

Discussion).

Level Two Heading

Level two headings are flush left, boldface, and have both uppercase and lowercase letters.

They relate to the subject matter in the level one paragraph(s).

Level three heading. Level three headings are indented, boldface, lowercase, in-line with the

paragraph, and ending with a period. They are related to subject matter in the level two

paragraph(s).

Level four heading. Level four headings are indented, boldface, italicized, lowercase, in-line

with the paragraph, and ending with a period. They are related to subject matter in the level three

paragraph(s).

Level five heading. Level five headings are indented, italicized, lowercase, in-line with the

paragraph, and ending with a period. They are related to subject matter in the level four

paragraph(s).
FONT AND FONT SIZE

 Times New Roman 12 is the standard font and font size to be used in all parts of capstone
project.
 In exceptional cases, different font size may be used within the appendices, tables and
figures. Do not reduce the font size below 10.

MARGINS

 The basic margin requirements are as follows:

- Left margin (bound-inside) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 ½ inches
- Right margin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 inch
- Top margin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 inch
- Bottom margin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 inch

Note : These margin requirements apply throughout the research project.

PAPER SIZE

 For the final copy of the research project, use 8 ½ x 11 - inch bond paper.

SPACING

 Use standard double-spacing for the text of all preliminary pages such as acknowledgement
and abstract, for the body of the research paper, and for text in the chapters and appendices
consistently double – spaces between paragraph.

 Single spacing must be used for multiple chapter titles and subheadings in the text, all table
headings, all figures captions, bibliographic entries, subheadings listed 5n the table of
contents.

 Single space block quotations, double-space before and after a block quotation unless a new
paragraph follows it; in that case, triple-space after the quotation. Indent block quotations
one-half inch from both the left and right margins.
PAGE NUMBER

 Every page of the research paper must have a page number except for the title page, which is
considered page ”i” but which should not be numbered.

 The preliminary parts (Title page, Approval sheet, Acknowledgements, Abstract, Table of
Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures) have a different numbering system using lower case
Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, etc.).

 Pages in the body of the research project together with appendices should be numbered in
the bottom right hand corner.
