Cristina from Romania and Martina from Hungary
ABOUT spent 11 months in Portugal learning and growing.
The long-term European Voluntary Service
project "PeeKaBoo: improving key competences
while working with children" gave them the
opportunity to move over 2000 kilometers away from
their home, do things that they have never imagined
doing and get experience in life.
PeeKaBoo was realized by Agoraveiro and Maternura
in cooperation with Group of the European Youth for
Change - GEYC from Romania and ReCreativity
Social Enterprise from Hungary.
The main objective of the project was to provide
learning opportunities to two youngsters in a way that
they could grow both personally and professionally,
gain or boost different key competences, take tem
back home and use what they learnt

ORGANIZATIONS
raising awareness when it comes to sustainability,

learning opportunities to youngsters from Aveiro.
Agora Aveiro coordinated the project PeeKaBoo.
Maternura (Portugal, est. 2011) is a non-profit
association that aims to create a network of support
and protection for children and mothers in order to
make the parenting experience more satisfying,

From September 2016, Cristina and Martina lived in
ACTIVITIES Aveiro and worked in Maternura in Ílhavo, Portugal.
On a daily basis, they were busy with a variety of
tasks, each day was different than the one before.
Their main activities consisted of supporting the
staff with practical arrangements and preparation,
developing and implementing pedagogical processes
and participating in the capacity building of
Maternura.
Besides their work with children, Cristina and Martina
participated in the activities of Agoraaveiro. They
organized Language Exchange Meetings, which are
free events for locals to meet new people, new
cultures, to learn and practice new languages.

By organizing learning events for children such as
OUTCOMES
of Cristina and Martina
movement sessions or handcraft and participating
in the everyday life of Maternura, they learned
flexibility, increased their sense of initiative,
creativity, and proactivity.
On the other hand, being around young children is
not a usual experience anymore, it is difficult for
young adults to acquire skills which are needed
when interacting with children. Martina and Cristina
learned how to connect better with young children
and their parents.

During the 11 months of the project, they
improved their life skills, social skills, verbal
and nonverbal communication skills. With
their improved competences they have
enhanced employability and career prospects.
They learned about their own learning and
working styles, how to express themselves,
their opinion and how to turn an idea into action
and success.
For them, PeeKaBoo was life-changing. All their
experiences from working with children, with the
staff of Maternura, organizing events in Aveiro,
travelling and discovering Portugal and the
Portuguese culture contributed both to their
personal and professional development, and
they are expected to have a long-term impact on
the lives of Martina and Cristina.

For the staff of Maternura and the parents, PeeKaBoo opened
IMPACT new horizons. Although there were several foreign volunteers
joining the staff, it was the first time they hosted EVS volunteers.
Through diversity, they learned about different approaches,
concepts, different types of motherhood and taking care of
children, that the girls brought with themselves. Cristina and
Martina brought energy and enthusiasm to the staff and the
whole space, filling it with joy and happiness.
The reaction of the children was very good. It was not the first
time for them to meet with foreigners, however, PeeKaBoo
created a unique, long-term opportunity for them to get to know
and connect with Martina and Cristina. For young children,
language is not a barrier and this project supported to a high
extent their development: they had such experiences what they
could never have gotten in a solely Portuguese institution.
Meeting new people, especially of different ages and
backgrounds, created many learning opportunities for them.

In PeeKaBoo, Agoraveiro got to use its
experience from the implementation of several
successful EVS and other international youth
projects.
By the end of the project, Agoraveiro increased its
capacities in the fields of management,
coordination and networking. Cross-sectoral
cooperation has always been in their main focus,
and through the partnership with Maternura, they
gained valuable experiences which will contribute
to the realization of even more successful
projects in the future.
Cristina and Martina joined several actions of
Agoraveiro as active creators and they built
strong connections with the local volunteers.
