Time: 02 Hours Full Marks: 40
[Answer all of the following questions]

1. (A) What do you mean by Microwave? 01

(B) Define and fully explain the meaning and consequences of the cutoff wavelength of a 03
(C) What is the fundamental difference between propagation in waveguides and propagation in 03
transmission lines or free space?
(D) A wave is propagated in a parallel-plane waveguide, under conditions as just discussed. The 03
frequency is 6 GHz, and the plane separation is 4 cm. Calculate
(a) The cutoff wavelength fir the dominant mode.
(b) The wavelength in a waveguide, also for the dominant mode.
(c) The corresponding group and phase velocities.
2. (A) Define the terms directivity and directional coupling as used with directional couplers, and 02
explain their significance.
(B) Draw and describe the circuit of a typical microwave triode amplifier or oscillators, and indicate 04
the performance figures of which it may be capable.
(C) What is a balun? What is a typical application of such a devices? 02
(D) Describe the double stub matcher, the procedure used for matching with it, and the applications 02
of the devices.
3. (A) What is a horn antenna? How is it fed? 02
(B) What functions does an antenna fulfill? What does the principle of reciprocity say about the 03
properties of the antenna?
(C) Explain how log-periodic antennas acquire their name. 02
(D) A rectangular waveguides measures 4  3.5 cm internally and has a 9 GHz signal propagated in 03
it. Calculated the cutoff wavelength, the guide wavelength, the group and phase velocities and
the characteristics wav impedances for (a) the TE1,0 mode and (b) the TM1,1 mode.
4. (A) Define the radiation resistance and beamwidth of an antenna. 02

(B) What factors govern the selection of the feed point of a dipole antenna? How do current feed and 03
voltage feed differ?
(C) A half-wave dipole antenna is capable of radiating 1-kw and has a 3.15-dB gain over an 02
isotropic antenna. How much power must be delivered to the isotropic (omnidirectional)
antenna, to match the field strength directional antenna?
