Experimental analysis of interface bond strength of thin white topping
INTRODUCTION
A bonded concrete overlay of asphalt pavements (BCOA), also known as bonded white
topping, is a rehabilitation technique consisting of placing a thin bonded Portland cement
concrete (PCC) layer over deteriorated hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement.
In order to ensure proper bonding between the existing asphalt layer and the concrete overlay
to behave like a monolithical structure, tack coat is often applied. The developed pavement
interface bond strength is therefore considered as an important parameter in governing the
overall performance of pavement serviceability. The importance of applying tack coat has
proved to increase the bonding performance between two interfaces which is agreed by
different researchers.
Tack coats are bituminous emulsions and the characteristics of these emulsions (viscosity,
binder content and the characteristics of the residual binder) play an important role in the
adhesion between layers, but the conditions of application of these coats are equally crucial.
The interface bond strength is a complex function of different factors like temperature,
mixture types, tack coat types, application rate, Surface texture on layer below, temperature
and moisture conditions.

OBJECTIVES/ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
The Objectives & probable outcomes of the study are as follows:

 To determine the interface bond strength (shear strength) of cement concrete layer
laid over asphalt layer or vice versa for following cases
 Smooth interface and Rough interface
 Varying temperature and moisture condition
 Varying thickness of cement concrete layer and asphalt layer
 Different type and rate of tack coat application
 To determine the tensile strength of the prepared specimen (Bonded concrete overlay
over asphalt or bonded asphalt overlay laid over cement concrete pavement)
