Characteristics that Make a Poster Interesting


Color Useful Information
 Used as text colors and title backgrounds  Presents only highlights of project
 Used as color blocks to organize or  Furthers understanding
emphasize information
 Outlines topic
 Is consistent throughout poster
 Includes only relevant information
 Use is logical, not random
 Uses relevant tables, charts, photos

Characteristics that Make a Poster Easy to Read


Text Uncluttered
 Is large and bold  Uses enough white space so poster does not
look crowded
 Is in a simple font (Times New Roman or Arial)
 Does not use too much white space so poster
 Is in bulleted phrases
looks empty
 Has no hanging indent if it is not bulleted

Content is easy to understand


Contrasting Colors
 Content is presented in a logical progression
 Are light and dark
 Uses minimal abbreviations and jargon
 Do not clash

Alignment
Organization
 Poster elements are aligned vertically and
 Uses section headings horizontally with each other
 Sections arranged top to bottom and left to
right
Bullets
 May use numbered sections
 Different bullets are used for different levels
 May use arrows, dividing lines, color blocks  There are not too many bullets
 Bulleted text uses a hanging indent
Consistency
 All elements throughout the poster are consistent with each other in terms of use of color, font, font size,
placement and alignment
