INTERNAL ANATOMY OF CHICKEN

Introduction
In this laboratory exercise we shall be studying the functions of the internal organs. This will not
only be a very interesting exercise to know what happens to feed and water after it has been
consumed, but you will also enjoy to know more about the internal processes that take place in
organs such as the lungs, the reproductive system and how body temperature is regulated. You
will also learn more about those organs that are involved in protecting the chicken against
diseases, the immune system.
Objectives
1. To identify the various parts of internal anatomy of male and female swine and
poultry.
2. To determine the importance and function of internal parts.
Importance to acquainted in internal anatomy of chicken
It will be useful for you to understand the anatomy and functions of different organs of
chickens. Only by dissecting can you really appreciate the relationship between an organ's
texture, location, and function.

Esophagus flexible tube that connects mouth to the crop.

Crop moisten and temporary storage of food.
Proventriculus uses acids and digestive enzymes to breakdown food.
Gizzard like “teeth,” it mechanically grinds up food particles.
Small Intestines absorption of nutrients from food.

Ceca fermentation of any left over food particles/water absorption.

Colon further water absorption.
Cloaca responsible for expulsion of feces and urine through the vent.
Liver produce bile to digest fats (stored in gall bladder).
Pancreas produces insulin, useful in carbohydrate digestion.
Heart the heart pumps blood throughout the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and
to remove carbon dioxide and metabolic waste from tissues.

Ovary poultry have only one functioning ovary, usually the left ovary.
Oviduct to produce albumen (egg white), shell membrane, and the shell around the yolk.
Testicles produce the sperm and seminal fluid.

Vas difference carries seminal fluid and sperm cells to the cloaca.
Cloaca is the enlarge part where the large intestine joins the end of the alimentary canal.
Papilla is the organ in the wall of the cloaca that puts the sperm cells into the hen reproductive
tract.

Brief description regarding the function/s importance of internal anatomy of chicken

Different internal organs of a chicken have different functions. The heart is the major organ of
circulatory system that pumps the oxygenated blood around the body; the lungs is te major
organs in the respiratory system that provides oxygen to the deoxygenated blood coming from
the heart and the small intestines which is the major organ in the digestive system that digest the
food and absorbs the nutrients from the food. These organs system control basic functions of life
and without one, all cannot perform.
