INTENDED OUTCOMES:

• The roots of algebraic or transcendental equations, solutions of large system of


linear equations and Eigen value problem of a matrix can be obtained numerically.
• When huge amounts of experimental data are involved, the methods discussed on
interpolation will be useful in constructing approximate polynomial to represent
the data and to find the intermediate values.
• The numerical differentiation and integration find application when the function in
the analytical form is too complicated or the huge amounts of data are given such
as series of measurements, observations or some other empirical information.

UNIT - I ONE DIMENSIONAL WAVE AND HEAT EQUATIONS


Laplace transform methods for one-dimensional wave equation – Displacements in a line string –
longitudinal vibration of an elastic bar – Fourier transform methods for one dimensional heat
conduction problems in infinite and semi-infinite rods.

UNIT - II ELLIPTIC EQUATIONS


Laplace equation – Properties of harmonic functions – Solution of Laplace’s equation by means
of Fourier transforms in a half plane, in an infinite strip and in a semi-infinite strip – Solution of
Poisson equation by Fourier transform method.

UNIT - III COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN ENGINEERING


Boundary value problem for ODE – Finite difference methods – Numerical Solution of PDE –
Solution of Laplace’s and Poisson equations – Liebmann’s iteration process – Solution of heat
conduction equation by Schmidt explicit formula and Crank – Nicolson implicit scheme –
Solution of wave equation.

UNIT - IV CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS


Concept of variation and its properties – Euler’s equation – Functional dependant on first and
higher order derivatives – Functional dependant on functions of several independent variables –
Variational problems with moving boundaries – Isoperimetric Problems – Direct methods – Ritz
and Kantorovich methods.

UNIT - V CONFORMAL MAPPING AND APPLICATIONS


The Schwarz – Christoffel transformation – Transformation of boundaries in parametric form –
Physical applications – Fluid flow and heat flow – Problems.

UNIT-II SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION AND ESTIMATION


Sampling distributions – Estimation of parameters – Method of Moments – Principle of Least
squares – Method of Maximum Likelihood.

UNIT -III TESTING OF HYPOTHESIS


Basic definitions of Statistical Hypothesis – Tests based on Normal, t, Chi-square and F
distributions for mean, variance and proportion.

UNIT -IV DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTS
