Purpose This is a statement of the problem to be investigated. It provides

the overall direction for laboratory investigation and must be
addressed in the conclusion.

Background Give a paragraph or two description of the concept to be

Information investigated in this lab. Identify the independent variable(s) that
will be considered, the dependent variable, and any constraints
maintained in the lab your group performed. Write out any math
or chemical equations that will be used in this lab. If there are
special constants to use, speed of light, Plank’s Constant, etc.,
then show the current accept values.

You could also include any force diagrams, charts, expected

graphs, etc.

Hypothesis Write a clear statement of how you think the variables relate to
each other in the lab. Do not just say they are related! Give an
indication about the type of relation; i.e. directly, inversely,
inverse square, or even none.

Apparatus All laboratory apparatus used in the investigation, along with a

detailed and labeled diagram to illustrate the configuration of the
apparatus, should be included in this section. See example below.
The variables to be measured should be clearly pictured.

You may use pictures from the lab but include some annotations
telling what is the device or how used.

Procedure This section should identify and name all experimental variables
and briefly describe how the independent variables are controlled.
Someone who was not present during the lab should be able to
understand how to perform the experiment by reading your
procedure. You may choose any neat and orderly format – just be
complete enough so another college student is able to follow your
directions.

Data Data consists only of those values measured directly from the
experimental apparatus.

No values obtained by way of mathematical manipulations or

interpretations of any kind may be included in this section of the
report.

Data should consist of as many trials as judgment would indicate

necessary. The units for physical measurements (kg, m, s, etc.) in
a data table should be specified in column heading only.

Calculations This section will use the quantitative data from above and show
(as needed) how any calculations were perform. It is not necessary to show
all calculations. A sample of each type of calculation is sufficient.
Label the calculation and include units.

Data Table This section will show a data table of the quantitative
and Graph observations and the results of calculations. The table should at
(as needed) least include the dependent and independent variables. Be sure
each column is labeled and include units.

The graph(s) should show the dependence being investigated.

Unless directed all graphs should start from the origin.

If you are using a graphing tool like Logger Pro, Graphical

Analysis, Excel or some other tool, you may cut and paste the data
table or graph into this location.

Evaluation This section should include analysis of graphs, and post

of Data laboratory calculations.

Include the mathematical model that describes the relationships

found in the graphs. Use the names of the variables and proper
units for any values. It is not appropriate to state y = mx + b.
Use the variables being studied.

If there is an expected value then calculate the percent error.

Discussion If there are Discussion Questions then add these Answers before
(optional) the conclusion. If there are classroom discussions of the lab
results then include notes and the general concepts developed.

In the conclusion you must do the following:

Conclusion
a) Summarize what occurred in the lab and results of the
investigation. If appropriate, state the relationship between
the variables identified in the purpose in a clear, concise
English sentence. Be sure to clearly identify any new values
such as index of refractions, yield of a reaction, equilibrium
constant, etc.
b) Give evidence for your results of the lab by describing the
graph, or giving sample data that shows the relationship, or
sample qualitative observations.
c) If possible when a mathematical expression can be derived
from graphical analysis, write it, making sure to include the
appropriate units. State the meaning of the slope and discuss
the significance of the y-intercept (when appropriate).
d) Describe any new terms that arise as a result of your
evaluation of data.
e) When your results differ from what is expected, determine the
percent error and provide a plausible explanation.
f) Provide any recommendations on how this lab could be
improved next time it is performed.

Pre-Lab If required then include the answers to Pre-Lab Questions.
