Mock Trial Vocabulary
Party Opponent-The person bringing the charges or the person the charges are being
brought against. If you are the person bringing the charges, then the person you are charging
is your party opponent.
Sequestration-The only witnesses allowed inside the courtroom are the party
representatives. All other witnesses will not be inside the courtroom and will not be able to
hear anyone else's testimony.
‘Tender-This is when you give a document to the jury/judge.
‘Well-the space in the courtroom between the attorney tables, witness stand, jury, and judge
Affidavit-This is the statement someone makes prior to being in the courtroom, they are
bound by this statement once called to testify.
* Bench-This is where the judge will be seated
Civil Case-Civil means it is a case one person or business is bringing against another person
or business
Criminal Case-This is when the District Attorney (aka the state) is the one bringing the
charges against someone.
Authenticity-Is this document what is claims to be or is it made up
Exhibit-These are the documents collected for use during the trial. These are the only
documents you are able to use.
Impeachment-When a witness says something in trial that contradicts what they previously
said in their affidavit, then you can impeach them proving they lied.
Pre-Trial-Preliminary matters that take place before the actual trial begins
Beyond a Reasonable Doubt-they jury must have no doubt before they can convict the
defendant,
