Notes on Classic Southern Soul (Track 1):


• Note that in bar 2 only, the second kick drum not (on the “and” of one) is missing.
• This track uses dominant 7th forms of the I and IV chords, showing the influence of the
blues.
• Notice the strong backbeat played by the guitar and snare drum.
• The bassline has a melodic quality as it moves from chord root to chord root, providing
strong linear energy. Notice that the root of the chord is always present on the strong
beats of the measure—beats 1 and 3.
