My Understanding of Professional Practice in Architecture
Architecture is defined by social, cultural and political constraints that makes an architect accountable to provide services to the society in a sensible manner. Professionalism is an important component in a social setting. Understanding the responsibilities, ethics and liabilities of the architecture profession is essential to practice in a socially responsible manner. The course teaches about the need for sustainability integration with design in the current scenario. This course develops, deepens and questions the techniques of integrating a professional way of practice with the design considerations. The understanding of this course helps an individual before stepping out in the market in terms of behavior, punctuality, accountability to the client as well as the society and helps in succeeding as a morally and ethically sound architect. The intent of teaching this course is to prevent unethical practices in the professions and to promote social responsibility in the profession. Certain norms and principles have been framed by Council of Architecture (COA) and Institute of Architects to safeguard the interests of the people as well as the architect. The rules and regulations protect the privileged status of the professions and prevents outsiders from penetration. These rules and regulations have been framed to be respected by architects as well as mention the responsibilities of an Architect towards humanity. There are various participants involved in the construction of a building- The Client, Architect, Civil Engineer, Quantity surveyor, Construction Manager, etc. and require time, money, tools and machines, manpower, etc. to complete the project. Managing the various participants and resources is essential to complete the project successfully. The course talks about the necessity of understanding the technical knowledge, management and business which are as important as design. The understanding of the various rules, laws, etc. to govern the society is essential to practice without any hinderances. An Architect needs to be responsible, liable and accountable for the delivery of his/her services. The course describes the various roles of an architect ranging from a designer to a manager. An architect plays a major role in the construction of a building and coordinates with other associates working on the project. Professional practice in Architecture is about making a final year student of architecture, understand the essence of the profession by teaching the various rules and regulation set by statutory bodies of architecture. The introduction to the profession becomes smoother by teaching the professional practice to the students before they step into the field.
