BARRIL, DOROTHEA BARNACHEA

IX – IDEALISM

REFLECTION PAPER
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

1. WHAT IS THE MOOD OF SCENE 1?

The Phantom of The Opera starts with a Black and White color themed scene, which is
supposed to portray the gloomy, dreary and sorrowful day felt by the main characters, Raoul and
Madame Giry in their old ages, because on this day, they are mourning for the death of Christine Daaé,
which is the main character of the Operatic play, they were in the middle of an auction, bidding for the
monkey music box, which emotionally meant a lot to Christine.

2. WHAT TYPE OF DRAMA IS SHOWN IN THE MOVIE?

The opera drama shows 4 main types of dramas namely, ACTION DRAMA, THRILLER
MYSTERY DRAMA AND ROMANTIC DRAMA. Action Drama, because it shows fight scenes in the drama
namely their sword fighting scenes and the other scenes wherein the other characters fight the
Phantom of the Opera, Thriller Drama, because it shows excitement in ways of action, suspense,
mystery or adventure. It holds the interest by the use of a high degree of intrigue, adventure or
suspense, keeping you at the edge of your seat. Mystery Drama, because it wonders you on what the
phantom will do next, and it lets you wonder on what the phantom looks like because the Phantom
doesn’t show his face until the end of the play.

3. WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE TRANSITION OF ONE SCENE TO THE OTHER?
The transition of past to present is well organized because you can really see the
difference of the past and the present by the color and the context, the scene transition is smooth
because it fades from one scene to another.

4. WHAT LESSON DID YOU LEARN FROM THE MOVIE?

The lesson I’ve learned is that:
1. You should be careful of those people you treat differently.
The Phantom wasn’t exactly born as a dangerous and evil person it was the torture and
the rejection he received from the Gypsy’s that made him act and be like that of a beast.
2. We are each responsible on how we choose to live our life.
There was a line in which Christine said to the Phantom ‘The haunted face doesn’t hold
horror for me now. It’s in your soul that true distortion lies.’ And that line just indicates
that its not the Phantoms appearance that makes him a beast but rather the actions
that he does are the beast like doings. The Phantom believes in true beauty, and
because he was mistreated when he was a kid, he decides to be a beast in accordance
to his face.
5. EXPLAIN THE ELEMENTS OF PERFORMANCE MANIFESTED IN THE MOVIE AS TO:
a. ACTING
Their acting was always on point; they had successfully conveyed the characters
supposed feelings. Kudos to Gerard Butler, for singing his heart out and for not
even having a proper background on singing, he still hits the high notes like he’s
a professional opera singer.
b. SPEAKING VOCAL EXPRESSIONS
Although they did not speak much in the movie, instead they sang their lines
which made it much better, it really showed their expressions and feelings
toward the person they are talking with.
c. INFLECTION
The rise and fall of their voice expresses their expressions greatly, they
conveyed the expression of the character in the current moment.
d. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Their facial expressions are extremely seen in the play, the actors and actresses
expressed the grief , loss, happiness, sadness, love, hatred and anger very much
in the play. Kudos to the director and the actors for creating such a beautiful
masterpiece
e. GESTURES
The gestures that were created by the actors are excellent, because I have
clearly seen the idea and feeling that they want to express by just seeing their
gestures, even though the volume is quite low, I can still understand the
meaning they are trying to give to the audience by just seeing the gesture they
are doing
6. WHERE DID THE STORY REVOLVE?

The story revolves on the love affair happening in between Christine, Raoul, and
the Phantom. It also revolves on the Acceptance of The 0hantom of True beauty which is not
only on the Outside but also in the inside.
