Mathematical Model of Series Excited DC Motor

Assignment:
1) Create mathematical model of series excited DC motor. The model of DC motor will be used
for simulation of dynamic transient phenomena. Assume work in the full range of
magnetisation characteristic. Friction in the model can be neglected.
2) Use Matlab/Simulink environment for modelling. The model should be created for one
direction of rotation. Parameters of DC machine are below.

Ia [A] f [mWb]
Pn  8 kW 0.0 0.20
Un  220 V 15.0 3.90
In  38.7 A 25.0 6.30
J  0.1 kgm2 30.0 7.10
Rab  0.34 Ω 35.0 7.67
nn  1500 min-1 38.7 7.92
45.0 8.05
k  166,2 55.0 8.10
70.0 8.15
100.0 8.17
700.0 8.17

where Ra, respectively La is resistance, resp. the inductance of the armature winding, Rb is the
resistance of the excitation winding, k is the constant of the machine and f  f(Ia) is
magnetisation characteristic. The magnetization characteristics should be modelled so, that it
won’t be source of problems during simulation.
3) Explain the selection and setting of the used solver.
4) Explain why the series excited DC motor can’t run up without load. (Show it on waveforms
from the simulation)
5) Explain why the series excited DC motor has to run up by reduced supply voltage. (Show it on
waveforms from the simulation)
6) Extend model with possibility of feeding DC motor by DC/DC converter with current control
loop and PI controller with anti-windup. Prove functionality of PI controller (Show it on
waveforms from the simulation)
7) Explain method chosen for design of regulator constants.

Comments:
1) Derivation of the model (DC machine equations) on the paper is recommended.
2) Only blocks from Simulink library are allowed.

Deadline:
Complete model and report from this task should be submitted on Y. tutorial, i.e. Y.Y.XXXX.
