of the "Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy"

In the social production of their existence, men enter into definite, necessary relations
independent of their will, relations of production which correspond to a certain degree of
development of their material productive forces. The totality of these relations constitutes the
economic structure of society, that is, the real basis on which a legal and political
superstructure rises and to which correspond definite forms of social consciousness. In
general, the mode of production of material life conditions the social, political and spiritual
processes of life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their being, but on the
contrary, their social being that determines their consciousness. At a certain stage of
development the material productive forces of society come into conflict with the existing
relations of production or, to use the equivalent legal term, with the property relations within
which they have operated hitherto. From forms of development that were the productive
forces these relations turn into their fetters them. Then begins an epoch of social revolution1.
