I am pleased to inform you that you have been appointed as the Head of Department Humanities
in Mwiyala Mixed Day Secondary School in the year 2017. This appointment is made with
confidence in your ability to steer the department to the achievement of excellent results.

Your duties and responsibilities will include but not are limited to:

• Teaching
• To develop and implement policies and practices which reflect the school’s commitment to
high achievement through effective teaching and learning.
• To supervise allocation of lessons to various teachers in the department constantly ensuring
that a teacher teaches vertically.
• To discuss departmental timetable with all members of the department and to ensure a fair
and realistic distribution of teaching load.
• To oversee the development and constant updating of teacher professional records including
but not limited to schemes of work, record of work, central mark books and lesson notes.
• To keep an up-to-date inventory of the department resources including textbooks and other
materials.
• To establish clear targets for achievement in each subject in the department and evaluate
progress through the use of appropriate assessments and records and regular analysis of this
data.
• To establish and implement a variety of systems and processes which provide good
information gathering about students’ prior learning, their progress and achievements and
the quality of teaching and learning in the subject.
• To involve all departmental colleagues in the creation and execution departmental motto,
vision and targets that are in tandem with the school’s values, vision, mission and motto.
• To hold regular departmental meetings; keeping departmental staff up-to-date with
decisions and proposals made by different groups to seek departmental views of these.
• To keep abreast of new developments in content and teaching style, including use of new
technologies.
• To constantly advise the Principal on the status of the department in terms of resources, staff
establishment and performance of duties in the department.
• To ensure that all subject staff follow the agreed syllabus and clearance of form syllabus
within the planned time frames.
• To ensure that examinations or other suitable methods of assessment are set and
administered at appropriate times.
• To ensure that all department staff understand and are actively implementing the key aspects
of the school’s behaviour and other policies.
• To come up with a variety of ways that will promote teamwork in the department.
• To implement and promote the use of performance management to develop the personal and
professional effectiveness of subject staff.
• Take initial responsibility for the pastoral care and welfare of all departmental staff.
• To ensure colleagues create a stimulating learning environment for the teaching and
learning of the subjects in the department.
• To be aware of and respond appropriately to any health and safety issues raised by
materials, practice or accommodation related to the subject.
• Appraise staff in the department as required by the employer.
• Provide a strong link between the school administration and the teachers in your
department.
