is very important for all Muslims and is indispensable in Islamic worshiping such as prayers (E
2012). However, there is still having some weaknesses in Malaysian students` and teachers` re
Qur`an. It was pointed out that there are some weaknesses in the recitation of the Quranic verse
students and teachers (Berita Harian, 2003).

According to Yusop, F.D., Razak, R.A. & Basar, S.M.M.A. (in press, 2014), one of the
contributing to teacher stress is heavy workload. Teachers are often responsible not only for t
tasks but also for administrative tasks. It is because teachers need to attend seminar, meeting, s
course and others which sometime take a long time. So, it can make teachers become tired, stres
give full concentration in their teaching.

This paper attempts to review methods and technologies, its advantages and potential bar
been used in teaching al-Qur`an.

Literature Review Methodology

This study utilises content analysis as the main methodology. The researcher reviews the
other’s paper based on the topic which is “Method in teaching Al-Qur`an using technology”.
relevant literature on method of teaching Al-Qur`an using technology, the search for relevan
conducted in two areas of research which are: 1) Method of teaching Al-Qur`an and 2) Tech
teaching Al-Qur`an. In addition, the search of relevant literature involves a complex 2-tiered pro
and selection of relevant literature and analysis of relevant literature.

1) Searching literature

To search the literature, a researcher has used some keywords in different databases and jou
“teaching Al-Qur`an”, “technology” or “method”.

2) Selecting relevant literature

In order to select relevant literature, a set of criteria was developed: 1) definition of Al-Qur`
studies, 3) aspects/area of studies, 4) research participants, 5) technology used, and 6
methodology used.

Major findings and discussions

Research Question 1: What kinds of method that has been used in teaching and learning

Al-Qur`an

In Malaysia, there are several methods in teaching Al-Quran. Some of the comm
likes Talaqqi, Musyafahah, Iqra`, and Al-Baghdadi. Basically, two methods of teaching Al
are Talaqqi and Musyafahah are applied in Malaysian school especially for j-QAF learning.
‘Khatam Al-Qur`an’ model and ‘Tasmik’ model (New Strait Times online, 2007).

Iqra` method is quite popular among Malaysian teachers and students too. This method
in Malaysia in the year of 1992 and Ministry of Education has decided to apply this method in
for all primary school under subject of ‘Tilawah Al-Qur`an’. In fact, Iqra` method have identifi
that can help children master the skill to read Al-Qur`an properly in a short time. Besides, throu
students will be teaching according to their achievement level. So that, students can easily follo
process and be able to master the recitation of Al-Quran quickly.

Also, Al-Baghdadi method has increasingly becomes a choice among Malaysians. Al-Ba
is easy and simple in learning Al-Qur`an. Learning are more fun with a ‘knocking tool’. Basica
also take weekly two hour lessons and mostly participants will be able to read Al-Qur`a
months. It is because through this Al-Baghdadi method, it disciplines the student to be consisten
the Quran. Besides, Al-Baghdadi method is not only for kids or teenagers, it also applies to adult

Research Question 2: What kinds of technology that has been used in teaching and

learning Al-Quran?

There are many research that has been done on the technology used in teaching Al-Qur`
example is a study about software which are called Electronic Braille Al-Qur`an software
software reads the database which contains all verses Al-Qur`an and user will need to select ve
read ( Razaly, F. et al, 2010). Basically, this software are developed to help those people whi
impaired users to learn Al-Qur`an easily and a better way.

Another is E-Hafiz system by Muhammad et al. (2012) to facilitate the learning and mem
Holy Quran, minimizing errors or mistakes of all kinds, and the systematization of the recitation
have used Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) technique in developing the system. In
want to give solution due to the accessibility and feasibility of a Hafiz expert.

Moreover, studies by Mssraty, T., & Faryadi (2012) which entitle: “Teaching the Qur`anic
Harakatt: A multimedia based Interactive Learning Method” were proposed a pedagogic model to
recitation teachers pronounce the correct Quran verses correctly. The pedagogical teaching model
recommendations of Ismail, Diah, Ahmad and Rahman (2011) and Samir et al. (2007).

Research Question 3: What is the advantages of using those technologies in teaching and

learning Al-Qur`an?

According to Elhadj, Y. O. M., Aoun-Allah, M., Alsughaiyer, I. A., & Alansari, A. (2012
system for self -learning of tajweed (E-Taj) provides different options allowing learners to
benefit and can help mastering this important field of Quranic Sciences. In addition, fro
perspective, such design and its retrieval features help users identify the meaning of that partic
the proper recitation, and also in what way the verse has been used to guide the creation and ge
human knowledge.

Additionally, N.Rashidi and O.Fatemi (2008) mentioned that some of the important ad
learning in Quran are; encourages students to peruse through information by using hyperlinks a
worldwide web, more focused on the learners and encourages students to take personal respons
own learning so that it will improve their self-confidence. Besides, Musy, T. D. (2005) ind
development of multimedia courseware for learning tajwid using talaqqi and musyafahah app
learning Tajwid more interesting regardless of the constraints in the learning process it enhance
movement and the skill of voice and written production.

Research Question 4: What are the potential barriers of using technologies in teaching and

learning Al-Qur`an?

Although technologies brought many advantages, there are possible barriers to use technol
Al-Qur`an. There are:

1) Need huge storage in computer to download the system.

2) Internet connection error. Sometimes, internet connection will be break down that
from the low internet bandwidth or too many users in one time. This barrier will give p
user to use the e-learning or online learning Quran.

3) Limited access. According to Yusop, F.D., Razak, R.A. & Basar, S.M.M.A. (in
their study ‘Social media for social advance’, one of the biggest limitations in
technology in the process of teaching and learning is limited access to adequate an
facilities in the school setting. It is because Malaysian classrooms are overcrowded wit
the ranges from 30 to 40 students per classroom.

Conclusion and Implications for courseware designers

This paper has discussed four aspects related to teaching al-Quran. They are: 1) Methods
Qur`an 2) Technology used in teaching Al-Qur`an 3) The advantages of using technology in teach
and 4) The potential barriers in using technology.

From these findings, the authors propose some guidelines on how is the best to utilize techn
purpose of teaching al-Quran. They are:

 The design of the courseware must include 2 main components which are Tajweed a
we know, recitation of the Holy book of Muslims, The Holy Quran, is a regions duty and
with utmost care such that no mistakes are made while reading it (Muhammad et al, 2012

 Designers need to also consider potential barriers and try to overcome them. Fo
courseware needs to be compatible with the user’s computer system. Example, use Flash
compatible with all computer system provided the user have Flash reader courseware in
specific software where the user needs to install it before using the courseware.

 The courseware designed need to consider the roles of teachers in assisting stud
technology. In Quranic teaching, teachers’ presence is very important in students’ unders
to correctly recite the al-Quran verses based on its Tajweed, which is correct pronunciat
Quran.

All of these guidelines are some of the important elements need to consider in des
courseware. They are in addition to considerations towards technical and usability aspects of the c
as the availability of menu or icon, location of back, forward, play buttons and many others.

Finally, findings of this study is hopefully contribute towards better understanding of t

teaching al-Qur`an and important aspects in designing and developing Quranic courseware. In s
people to improve their skill in reciting Al-Qur`an and then understand the verses. May all of th
guide us to an effective manner and always in the blessing of Allah S.W.T.
