Did I understand the brief?

I understood the brief as it ask me to produce 5 minute radio drama, they asked me to make sure
that I used Foley sounds, find and source actors. They also asked me to analyse other radio dramas
so that I understood how they were made and what I need to add to make my radio drama to a good
standard.

Was I able to analyse the use of sound effects, ambient sound and ambient music?

I was able too understand the use of the sound effects and what they were used for, most of the
sound effects where used to give context to what was going on in the drama as you can’t see what
going so in order for the listener to understand what’s going they use sound to make sure that they
know the place where its set, what time of day or what going on the scene that they are trying to
describe. The use of ambient sound is to give some context to where it’s located for example for my
radio drama I want to have a diner so for me to show that they characters are at the diner I will
source sounds from a diner to give there listener context. In radio dramas they used ambient music
to add effect to what going on for example they might use sad music to add effect to it and make the
listen really feel as if they are connected to the story. They also might use ambient music to fill space
that they need to add, they could also use it to as a transition between two scenes.

Did I explain the use of codes and conventions in radio drama?

I explained the codes and conventions of a radio drama by analysing a very good example of a radio
drama I looked at what made it a good drama by picking apart what makes a drama radio and
commenting what was used and how they used it to achieve to the effect that they wanted. I also
used his information to understand what makes a good radio drama and what was effective from
the genre that they where doing and how they used sound to hit give their genre the right effect

Could I use software effectively to produce a podcast?

I would say I used adobe audition well to produce my final product as I knew how to put the files in
the needed. I used to have a bit of practice before editing my radio drama by make an edit of the
Jurassic park scene. This helped me understand what sound meant to a piece of work, so I knew how
I would like my sounds to be in like in my radio drama. I used to learn how to produce a good piece
of work. I also learnt how to use the editing of the sound that I must make it sound like its recorded
in a bathroom but add certain effects. But I think that if I put more time into the editing process of
my radio drama it would come out a lot better.

Was my research effective?

My research was effective as I knew when to air my radio drama if I wanted the best number of
viewers that I could get by knowing this it was very effective to give my radio the edge over others.
My research also helped me as we did a sample of 3 people to see what type of drama interest them
so that I have a small idea of what people would want from a drama. I did this so that I could really
nail what my target audience wants so that my radio drama would appeal to them.

How will this understanding help me improve my final product?

My research would help me improve my final product as I would know what people look for in good
radio drama and what makes them keep listen instead of turning off whatever device they are using.
By knowing this I am able to see what factors they have to used to make the radio drama more
enjoyable for people to listen or how they have make a moment feel like you are watch it so that the
listen could visualise what it is happening in the scene that they are describing. From the research
that I did I understood that people want the radio to be interesting so I decided to base mine off the
series American Horror Story : Cult as a lot of people my age watch it so I would know what types of
genres are in at this point in time, so that I could get them at least somewhat interested.

How could have improved my research?

I could have improved my research by getting more responses on my survey so that I could
understand a lot more about my target audience so that I can really know what I need to make my
radio more appealing to them. I could have gathered a lot more secondary research so that I know
what other radio dramas are like so I could base mine on them so that I have a good idea of what
makes a good radio drama. I could also have looked at a lot more radio dramas from different types
(Horror, Romance) So that I could keep my options open, this could also have helped me by
understanding what makes them a romance or what makes them a horror so that I could understand
the differences between them.

LO2:

Could I have improved my pre-production and planning?

I could have improved my pre-production planning and planning if I make sure that understood what
would have been effective for the characters to make more sense they just appeared with nothing to
them really. Also, I think I could have planned a lot better on how long it too be edit the radio drama
as I was missing parts of actors saying parts, so I had to go out to re clip some of the parts which was
a pain for me as well as them.

Was my script effective?

I think that my script was not as effective as I wanted it to be, the reason for this is because I really
struggled to get the story that I wanted out of my head and into writing. Another problem that I had
with the script is that time as the radio drama needed to be around 5 mins long for the first script
that I wrote it was only up to 3 minutes so I had to add a lot more also It did not help that I only had
about 6 days left to record and edit the whole thing so towards the end of the radio drama you can
tell that it is rushed. Another problem with the script is the ending as it just stopped there’s no fast
paced ending it just stops with the phone call. Also the beginning of the radio drama felt a stale after
looking at from a different point of view as the whole part just seemed forced. Hopefully next time I
can make sure that think of the right ending that would make a lot more sense than this one.

Were my actors appropriate for their parts?

My actors where all good for their parts as I picked people that could do the most with their voice.
Jude did the role of Ashley and Ben as I could find any actors and I was on a time limit, so I had Jude
play both characters but I good thing that I got Jude to do is make Ashley voice have a creepy edge
to it so that I makes him seem to be the one to watch that he’s a little bit odd to all the other
characters. I picked Leo’s character based on his scream when auditioning as he clearly fitted the
role that I wanted him to(Sarah). I picked Ellie as she had the most basic voice, as Cassie is just a
middle-class girl and nothing more, so I thought Ellie would have been a good choice for her. Now
for Rysen I chose myself as I wanted a character that sucked the life of them as risen has no
emotion, so I picked myself as I can do that very well.
Were rehearsals effective?

My rehearsals went well as everyone turned up, we all knew our lines off by heart and we managed
to get the characters in the way that I wanted them to be. We all where focused on what needed to
be done and it worked well in practice.

Were my Foley sounds effective?

I think that my Foley sound where effective as I nailed the drowning sounds as I used water and put
myself underwater and I made it sound like someone was struggling to breath as I need to it to
sound like that. Another one of my Foley sounds that went well was my diner sounds this is because
I went to work and left my camera on record while working to get some real good sounds like you
were evolved with the radio drama. Also, the door slams where good as I used a heavy door from my
work to make sure I got the good sound of the door closing and with the handle hitting the door
after.

Did I make good use of music and ambient sound?

I don’t think that I made good use of my music as I sort of just slapped them in the edit place and did
not really think about the effect that I could have on the radio drama itself. For the first bit of the
radio drama I used a sort of romantic music to try to show the tension between them, but it works
more as a filler as it just doesn’t work with the script all too well as there’s no tension in what they
are saying or the way that they are staying it. The other music that I used work quite well s it was
just after Sarah had died and I used it in a way that highlighted the impact that It had on them. next
time I will make suet that I used my script in a way that I can use music to help better show the
impact of something that happened in the drama.

Could I have recorded and edited my drama more professionally?

I could have recorded my radio drama better by having better equipment as I started off by using my
camera to record the dialog and the sound, this was an ok option to get them, but the sound quality
wasn’t not the. To top it all off at some point it thought it would be a good idea to record the sound
with a handheld microphone which had good quality so that would make the sound of both quite
varied as one would have a good quality while the other had ok quality so you can clearly hear the
difference in sound when listening to the radio drama, so next time when I go to get sound/dialog I
will make sure that I use the proper radio equipment that the college has to order as it would give
my radio the high quality edge that it needs in order to be good.

What feedback have I received about my drama?

The feedback that I received was mixed this might have been because of some people did not like
the charterers, this might be because they did not get much information about them and that I did
not really show what the charaters are like showing the relationship between risen and Sarah better.
Also from my feedback I got that some of my sound effects used where a bit too long and this might
hve had an effect on the feedback and the sound effect might have become too repetitive after
awhile so it might have made them a bit bored of listing to it. The good points that I got was the
sound effects apart from them being to long most of the people agreed that my use dof sounds were
good as most of them gave context to what was going on in the radio drama so that the listener
could understand what was taking place, for example when Sarah dies you know that she has
drowned b the use of my Foley sound of someone drowning so it gives the listener more context
about what has happened. So overall I have found out that a lot of the people enjoyed it but I could
definitely improve it to make it a better experience.
What would I do to improve my work?

The first thing that I could do to improve my work is to make sure that my characters are clearly
explained what they are like which would help the listeners understand why Sarah is being dragged
into a cult, this would help people understand why and it would give them a better insight into why
she is going to do this, I could have put an extra scene where Rysen is explaining what she has done
to his fellow clan mate therefore making it a lot easier for people to understand his motives for
getting Sarah involved with his cult. Another thing that I could improve is the script as I think that my
indicial idea was good but it lacked in the writing department as most of the conversations in the
radio drama lacks the emotion that other radio drama have so I think that it led people to feel bored
while listening to it as it most of the conversations don’t feel like a natural chat with friends so by
making the script better people would have been more likely to enjoy the radio drama. Another
point that I came across when looking at the feedback that I got given is that most of them agreed
that the music was either too long or did not fit all too well, in order to make a good radio drama
you need to make a good use of music as it gives the piece more emotion than if you didn’t have any
at all, so for when if I do a radio drama again I will make sure that I add music more carefully ad
really think about the emotion that I want that music to help enlighten the overall feel of that scene.
I also could have used made my script show a little bit more emotion as it could have really needed
the boost so that people would have been more involved in relating themselves in the emotions that
the actors are trying to say therefore making it a more enjoyable listen. Overall if I made these
improvement to my radio drama it would really feel like a professionally produced piece so if I want
to do a radio drama next time I will be able to make a piece that really stands out from others that
have been made.
Screenshots of edit

For the first scene I have cut down the audio for Sarah(Green) and Rysen(Red) I cut down the audio
of this to make sure that the lines where to a god standard and that it did not have any background
noise or any mess ups in the audio. I also levelled both audio levels so that you can tell that they are
both in the same and not recorded separately which I did I just have to level the sound of both
actors. For the part in yellow which is the ambient sound of a diner which I used over the top of the
dialog so that I gave the scene context. For this I made the effect on it heighten the sounds of knives
and forks hitting the plates so that the listener could understand where they are located I also added
a fade in and out to the sound clip so that its less harsh on the listener. The last clip in this scene is
the music I cut it down to get the best part of the music I also added a fade in out so that the
transition of the scene is much more fluid.

For the next scene there is not much editing as all I needed for this scene is the part of Cassie and
Sarah which I cut down so that there is no breaks in between their dialog and I also take out the
parts where they messed up on the script and if that got into my radio it wold make it look stupid.
The sound effects that I have used for this part is the sound of cars going past on a road, the editing
that I had to do for this is that I had to level the sound of it so that its not too loud or too quiet so
that you can still hear the dialog that is going on without the sound effect covering what they are
saying.
For the 3rd scene the editing that I have done is cutting down the dialog so that there is no
background sound and that their dialog isn’t cut off at all. For the first sound effect that you hear is
the sound is the opening of a door so theres no real edit for this clip only the level of the sound so
that its at the right level with the dialog. The other sounds that have been used is the effect of sarah
getting punched which was hard to get the time of her fall over getting hit and then breaking the
glass that was on the table, after that I used a white noise sound effect to show that she had been
hit on her head and that she was unaware of what happens next and where she was taken.
For scene 4 again I cut down the dialog so that sounds all good. For the first sound effect I used a
small group whispering to show the listens of the location that Sarah and Rysen are at. I added the
fade at the end of it to show that the cult members are quieting down which worked quite well to
show what I wanted to happen. The next effect that I added as on Sarah voice to make her scream
sound muffled like she was being forced to do this that she did not want this to happen and finally
the last effect that I added which is the drowning of Sarah this worked well as you can tell her she
has died as it just stopped suddenly.

For the final scene I have used the effect of footsteps so that the listeners can get the information
that she about to meet with Rysen. Then I added the sound of a heavy door to show that she
entering something big. Then the final effect that I added was the phone call to make it sound as if it
was recorded by adding the party downstairs.
