Assessing the Iran Nuclear Deal

2015 2020 2025 2030 2035 2040

NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS
Under JCPOA, Iran commits never to build a nuclear weapon
CONTINUES IN
PERPETUITY

NO W EAPONS GRADE PLUTONIUM

No Reactor to Produce Plutonium

Disables and removes Iran’s one reactor core

at Arak that could produce weapons grade
plutonium. Iran is prohibited from engaging
in any reprocessing activities until 2030.

NO WEAPONS GRADE URANIUM

Reduces Low-Enriched Uranium Not until 2031 could Iran begin
enriching beyond 3.67% (LEU).
But without the JCPOA, Iran could
do that tomorrow.
Reduces and limits Iran’s stockpile of LEU
to 300kg until 2030. No one can make
nuclear weapons with 300kg of LEU.

Reduced Centrifuges Limits on IR-1 centrifuges and R&D

until 2025 while R&D on advanced
centrifuges is tightly restrained and
limited until 2030.
Reduces and limits the number of Iran’s
centrifuges by 2/3 from 19,000 to 6,104. Total SWU (Separative Work Units:
a standard measure of enrichment
capacity) are frozen until 2028.

NO COVERT PROGRAMS
Robust IAEA Safeguards
CONTINUES IN
PERPETUITY

No country has acquired nuclear weapons with the IAEA Additional

Protocol in place. As a result of the JCPOA, robust IAEA safeguards
and access to undeclared sites continue in perpetuity.

Procurement Channel Monitoring Some monitoring

beyond 2040.

UN Security Council must approve the sale to Iran of any materials and
technologies that could be used for nuclear activities until 2040.

Continuous Surveillance The IAEA has certified Iran’s

compliance 9 times, most recently
in November 2017.

Continuous surveillance of centrifuge production sites,

plants, and stocks continues until 2035.
