SJUS 2020

Midterm Project

For your midterm project, please turn in ONE of the following by the start of next
class:

• Advocacy project
In a piece of writing of about 750 words, respond to these questions: (1)
“Is capitalism the problem [i.e., the fundamental cause of poverty]?”
And (2) what’s a solution? Please note that neither question presumes
an answer. However, both require that you explain your answer,
whatever it is.

• Art-making project
Create a brief play, poem, short story, song, image or other work of
expressive art that captures what to you is the essential truth of ONE
of the attached news stories linked at the bottom of this post. Include
an accompanying paragraph in which you comment on what your piece
seeks to express and how.

• Analysis project
In a piece of writing of about 750 words, analyze the significance of one
or more “figures of solidarity” from the film Pride. You might choose a
single scene (à la the Cliff and Hefina scene), a recurring motif (à la the
“clasped hands” motif), or a relationship (à la Joe and Steph). What
does this figure say about the possibility (or impossibility) of forging
meaningful connections across class, sexuality, and/or gender lines.

• Autobiographical project
Write about a personal experience of intersectional oppression and/or of
the struggle against it. What happened? What have you taken away
from the experience? This piece should be about 750 words long.

Please share your project with me via Google Drive and label your doc as
follows: SJUS 2020 – Your name – midterm project. If you are creating a visual
image, please photograph it clearly and include the photo in your Google Doc.
