Texas Alliance for Minority in Engineering (TAME)’s traveling Trailblazers are one-of-a-kind
science museums-on-wheels. Exciting, hands-on exhibits teach students about energy, space,
weather, biotechnology, and aerodynamics while also introducing them to educational and career
opportunities in STEM.
“We are so excited to have the TAME Trailblazer visiting KISD during the month of February! Over
200 of our students will have the opportunity to learn more about the educational and career
opportunities of STEM. We thank Shell for providing our students with this awesome experience!”
explains Shelli Morgan, Kermit Junior High Teacher and Science Corps Coordinator at the school.
“Shell is pleased to offer this fun, educational opportunity to local students,” said Amir Gerges,
General Manager of Shell’s Permian operations. “Inspiring and developing a local future workforce
in the areas where we operate is a priority for Shell.”
LNESC and Shell Oil Company have had a long partnership promoting student leaders and
education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The Science
Corps after-school program in the Kermit Independent School District, sponsored by Shell and
administered by LNESC, seeks to motivate middle school students to pursue careers in the STEM
fields by exposing them to real-world STEM applications and problems.
The Kermit Junior High Shell Science Corps program was established in 2014. Students meet twice
a week with science and/or math teachers completing fun, hands-on activities while effectively
increasing mastery of STEM subjects. By combining hands-on, inquiry-based learning; field
excursions; exposing students to STEM professionals, and developing group cohesion and a
scholastic identity around science, the Shell Science Corps program has been a success in Kermit
and Houston.
