How do I verify if results make sense?

– Here is are examples of things to consider when checking

the accuracy of your model:

– Compare the system weight with reactions on the vertical

supports

– Sum the reactions in two horizontal directions

– Review displacements of the system in different

conditions: operating, sustained, etc.

– Look out for disconnected legs.

Evaluate the Results Graphically

– Review graphics and reports together

– Identify locations of interest – Maximum stress,

displacement, forces/moments.
Evaluate Stress in the Piping System

Typical load cases to consider

L1: W+T1+P1 (OPE)

L2: W+P1 (SUS)

L3: WIND1 (OCC)

L4: W+T1+P1+WIND1 (OPE)

L5: L1-L2 (EXP) (Algebraic)

L6: L2+L3 (OCC) (Scalar)

Structural Stress

(restraint loads and system deflections) (code-defined)
Poll Question 1
Evaluate Stress in the Piping System, Cont.

Stress reports (or Code Compliance) – only for those

cases for which the active code defines a stress type
– SUStained Cases (for most codes)
– EXPansion Cases (for most codes)
– OCCasional Cases (for most codes, if present)
– OPErating Cases (only for B31.4, B31.8, BS 7159,
UKOOA, etc.)
– Special Japanese KHK, EN13445 Creep cases

Cumulative Usage Report

– Generated locally for all selected Fatigue Cases

that may occur together

▪ There are many types of reports

▪ Regular
Reports

▪ Summary
Reports

▪ Extended
Reports

▪ Nozzle check

▪ Flange check
Individual Output Reports

– Each load case reported separately

Summary Output Reports

– Loads cases together for each node

– The “MAX” line is also added at the end.
Code Compliance Output Report

– Code compliance statement

– Loads cases together for each node
Nozzle / Flange Check Report

– Report for Nozzle and Flange screening analysis

Evaluate Loads on Supports

Check loads from each load case or create envelope

load cases. Examples:
What is the
– Max case, load on this
– Envelope the range of loads
 steel?

SignMin and SignMax cases

– Civil/Structural department may

want individual load primitives
Evaluate Loads on Supports, cont.

• Restraints vs Restraint Summary reports

• Shows supports with multiple restraints
Evaluate Loads on Supports, cont.

• Local restraint reports are useful for skewed pipe.

• The standard X,Y,Z global coordinate

system used in CAESAR II output is

augmented by a local coordinate system

• This local report provides element forces

and moments in terms of axial and shear

loads, and torque and bending moments.
The Local Coordinate System

The local x axis points from the element From node to

the To node. This is pipe’s axial direction.

The local y axis depends:

– where x is vertical then y is along global +X
– Otherwise, y is the cross product of the local x and global
vertical up.

The local z is the cross product of local x and local y.

Global axis is denoted by capital letters (X/Y/Z) versus

local axis (x/y/z)

Local restraint reports are useful

for skewed pipe.
Poll Question 2
Select and Size Supports

– Use Hanger Table with Text

– Or export the report to Microsoft Access

Size this spring…

…to minimize this pump load

Check Pipe Deflection under Load

– Use the Displacement or Restraint Summary Extended

reports
– Examples: proximity to a critical equipment, pipe falling off
support, support not able to sustain deflection
How much does this
elbow move when the
system heats up?
Verify Loads on Connected Equipment

– Use Restraint reports

– Can also set up load limit screening tool and use the
Nozzle Check report
Is this pump overloaded?
