2. (a) What is angle of friction? Find the relation between angle of friction 4
and coefficient of friction?
(b) A block of weight W1 = 200 kN rests on a horizontal surface and 7
supports on top of it another block of weight W2=50 kN. The block
W2 is attached to a vertical wall by the inclined massless string AB.
Find the magnitude of the horizontal force P applied to the lower
block as shown in Fig.-Q2(b), that will be necessary to cause slipping
to impend. The coefficient of static friction for all contiguous surfaces
is m = 0.3.

3 (a) Calculate the x and y coordinates of the centroid of the shaded region 6
shown in Fig.-Q3. when centroid of the circular hole is (3",3").
(b) Calculate the area moment of inertia of the shaded area about x-axis as 5
shown in Fig.-Q3.

5 (a) State Varignon’s theorem on moment of two forces and prove it. 5
(b) A horizontal beam AB of weight W is hinged to a vertical wall at A 6
and supported by a tie rod CD. Find the tension s in the tie rod and
reaction at A for the force P and weight W, when C is the mid point
of AB.

10 (a) At a point in an elastic material under strain, there are normal stresses 7
of 100MPa and 60MPa respectively at right angles to each other, with
positive shearing stress of 40MPa as shown in Fig.-Q10(a). Find the
principal stresses and angle of principal planes. Also find out the
