ISSN Project Reflection: Silence the Violence
In this project our main objective was to find the standard deviations of the homicides,
the amount of guns owned and the amount of money gained from these guns; and to see if there
was any relationship between the two by finding the correlation. When I first recieved the project
I thought of how I would approach this at first because in the end we would have to create a
video. I wanted my information to make sense when I transfered it onto the video and for it not
to just be informational but to give a warning and a heads up to people across the nation. I
wanted to finish on time and not save it for last minute, I also wanted the presentation to be good
as well and that my partner and I to be knowledgeable at the math that we solved when we went
up.
First we had to determine what variables we would compare, we had to chose multiple,
by twos which we would find the standard deviation for and compare them. We also had to
create a graph and find the line of best fit in order to find the relation between the variables
present. Since there were multiple variables being compared we had to plot all these points on
the graph and see, through the line of the best fit which determines what variables are more
related to one another. We then had to create a public service announcement about the recurring
violence in the United States. Based on the information we gathered, we created this video to
inform people of the gun use in the U.S and the amount of people who are killed.
I learned a lot about the gun use in the United States and the amount of homicides present
because of the amount of gun use in the U.S. I also learned that there are differences (obviously)
between the gun use in the U.S and in different countries by the homicides present in these
countries. I also learned that I really care about the wellbeing of others across the nation and that
violence should be decreasing in the countries that have it the most guns. Gun control should
also take place in certain areas because of the amount of violence. An area I need improvement
in is probably the time I turn in things and how I manage my time in order to get my work done.
An area I excel at is doing the mathematics, my partner and I were able to solve it. I also have to
familiarize myself more with the math terms and calculation.
I recognized and weighed perspectives by understanding the way the United States and
other countries in the world use their guns and how many deaths. We were able to compare other
countries to the United States. I think it made me more exposed to what other countries regulate
and how they use their guns. It was really interesting how the different countries we explored
because of their environment and our prior knowledge of these areas we know why it is like that.
