The Grand Lake Ecosystem Experiment (GLEE), a

cooperative project between Bowling Green University,
Algaeventure Systems and the City of Celina, will treat a
controlled area with silica (sand) to help non-toxic, nutrient-
rich, diatom dominant green algae to grow and out-compete
the harmful blue-green algae, with the goal of a cleaner
lake and improved fisheries. The green algae is considered
suitable for green energy production.
A second project involves dosing six controlled areas of

in the water column, then carry it to the bottom of the lake
and bind it in the sediment, making it unavailable for blue-

Reframing the marriage celebration

At one parish where I was
assigned, there was a woman,
a widow in her 70s, who
would often attend wedding
ceremonies at the church. This
person would dress up so she
would fit in with the crowd,
then wait until the ceremony
had just begun, walk in the
back door that was off to
the side, and sit a few rows
behind all other guests. At
the end of the ceremony, she
would leave just before the
recessional.
I often would see her back
there, so one day I asked
if she knew all these bridal
couples. There was a little
fear in her answer, as if she
had done something wrong,
when she said no, that she
simply wanted to be with
young people as they were
getting married.
She confessed that
sometimes she felt lonely
and found joy in the wedding
ceremony. Mostly, though,
she simply wanted to pray
for young couples beginning

So much for a long
summer. Just where did June,
July, and August go? It seems
only yesterday that May was
finishing up and we could
hardly wait for Summer to get
here. Now the evenings are
starting to cool down some
and before you know it we
will all be wearing overcoats
and gloves. But that is the
price you pay for living in
Ohio year round.
Football started this past
Friday and it appears there are
many good teams right here
in Northwest Ohio. It will be
interesting to see how it all
plays out come December and
the playoffs. It would appear

Last week, I illustrated
Blackcreek Township Trustees’
checks for 1920, 1936, and
1937, which I had purchased
over ebay. I was surprised at
the interest in those checks,
which i received. therefore,
this week, I will look through
the Blackcreek Township
Trustees’ canceled checks for
1940.
The following checks were
written in 1940: February
24, Wm. H. Hecht Insurance
Agency was paid $9.50 for
Bond of Constable. June 29,
Hardy Dennis and Wilson
Snyder were paid for labor and
Paul Sapp was paid for mowing
with Team, at Cemetery.
Rockford Telephone Co. was
paid $10.30 for lights for
Township for May. June 29,
Frank Ketrow was paid $425.00
for Memorial Day Service.
July 27, Rockford Press was
paid $1.50 for printing a legal
notice. July 27, Mrs. C.W.
Gause was paid $12.00 for
Soldiers Relief. August 31,
Carl Lee was paid $6.30 for
labor at Cemetery. October 26,
they paid Rockford Lumber Co.

service. The Trustees paid
their marriage journey.
I commended her and
assured her that she was
not imposing herself on the
bride and groom. In fact,
she probably had a better
understanding of a marriage
ceremony than most of
the bridal parties and their
parents have. She knew it
was a public act of worship!
Sadly, many people have
drifted into thinking of a
marriage ceremony, with or
without a Mass, as a private
event arranged and sponsored
by the couple getting married.
Thus we hear such things at
churches as couples asking if
they can “rent the church” for
their wedding. That attitude
of the marriage ceremony
being private also comes
to the surface when family
members feel they have a
right to do almost anything
they want in the church at the
time of their son or daughter’s
wedding.
Any pastor will be able
to share stories of conflict
with personnel representing
Coldwater, Ohio

for grabs.
It would seem Kenton has
a good chance at winning
the WBL. It becomes a big
guess as any one team in both
conferences can win it all.

truck, while they paid Herbert

the truck. Cron Tire & Supply
Co. received $1.50 for an A.C.
Oil Filter for that truck. The
City Garage received $10.54
for greasing and repair for the
truck.
These old canceled checks
provide us with a glimpse
of the history of Blackcreek
the marriage industry in this
country. These stories of
complaint do not necessarily
come from overly-strict or
controlling pastors but from
those who want the wedding
ceremony to be prayerful and
truly an act of worship.
Photographers moving
furniture, including the altar,
‘for a better shot,’ is just
one example. I recall one
photographer who managed
to stand between the bride
and the bride’s parents while
the vows were being spoken.
I don’t know if the picture
was good, but I saw how
disappointed the bride’s
parents were that they could
not see their own daughter
and future son-in-law at such
a holy time.
Another example is when
I walked into an old church
about an hour before the
wedding was to begin. The
florist hired for the event had
a hammer and was pounding
a nail into the end of a pew so
she could hang a floral piece.
Such attitudes and actions
and get ready to lay down
your tired old head, be sure to
tell that little lady next to you
just how much you need and
love her. And don’t forget to
do the same thing with your
kids. They need to hear that
quite often. And give them
a hug too. And by the way,
don’t forget those men and
women in the armed services
that are in harms way this
very minute in your prayers
tonight. Hopefully, we will
get them all home soon and
end this dumb fighting.

the life of worship within the
church.
Truly, I am not blaming
couples or even those who
make their living by providing
services for weddings.
Nonetheless, there has to
be a new way of looking at
marriages that take place in
our parishes.
First of all, we have to find
ways to remind people that
the wedding is an official and
public form of worship of the
church. Like the widow who
attended so many weddings,
all people in the parish need

Unfortunately, many people are focusing on the gloomy
headlines: the possibility of a double-dip recession,
European debt concerns, slowing growth in China and
other factors. And when investors get jittery, they tend to
flee the stock market, which leads to the declines we’ve
seen in recent days.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that there really
is some good news out there. Consider the following:
• Sustainable economic recovery — The economic
recovery is already a year old. In fact, the economy grew
by about 3 percent in the first half of this year — one of
the largest turnarounds in 50 years. We’re now entering a
more sustainable recovery pace. And although there may
be some bumps in the road, there’s probably little chance
of a double-dip recession, an event that, historically, is
quite rare.
• Low inflation, interest rates — Inflation is currently
running at a manageable 2 percent per year, while interest
rates remain at near all-time lows. The ability to borrow
inexpensively during periods of low inflation historically
leads to stronger economic demand.
• Strong corporate earnings — Following the end of the
recession, corporate profits have improved dramatically —
and companies are using their strong profits and growing
cash balances to boost their dividends. This is also good
news, because companies typically don’t raise dividends
unless they’re somewhat confident about the future.
• Stocks priced favorably — Many quality stocks are
attractively valued today, based on their price-to-earnings
ratio, or P/E. Typically, the lower the P/E, the better the
value. Currently, the P/E of the stocks in the Standard &
Poors 500 is about 12; over the past 22 years, the average
P/E was 18.5.
• Historical precedent — The past decade has not been a
good one for stocks. But during the past 80 years, whenever
stocks have done poorly over a decade (average annualized
10-year returns of less than 4 percent), the returns over the
next 10 years have been strong (annualized average returns
of 12.5 percent per year). While past performance can’t
guarantee future results, history is still on the side of the
optimistic investor.
Given these factors, what should you do now? For
starters, don’t panic. Don’t rush into ultra-conservative
investments because you’re worried about stock market
declines; with today’s low interest rates, these vehicles may
not help you much in achieving your long-term financial
goals. Instead, balance your portfolio with an appropriate
mix of short-term investments, such as cash and certificates
of deposit (CDs), and long-term investments, such as
stocks and bonds. Your ideal balance should be based on
your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and specific
objectives.
And as you balance your portfolio, look for the best
opportunities available today. It takes discipline and
confidence to ignore the “bad news” of today and invest
for tomorrow. But in the long run, it’s worth the effort.

Eat Pray Love

Never, never judge a book by the movie
of the same title. I could not wait to pay my
$5 to see the movie Eat Pray Love and was
just sure I would want to do so more than
once. Well, in my judgment and view, the
book was so much better.
On the best seller list right now is
Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love and I recommend it for
its travel descriptions, spirituality and her mindfulness
of her wellbeing. Elizabeth is 31, successful, married,
owns a lovely home and should be happy but she is not.
Depressingly not happy is a better description. She divorces
her husband and leaves for a year of soul searching abroad.
First, she travels to Rome, for pleasure of food, beauty and
to practice her Italian with the natives. She has embraced
Italian with a passion, loves the food and especially gelato,
a form of rich ice cream. Next, she travels to India to an
ashram for spiritual searching and study. Here she finds
prayer and friendships. Next, Elizabeth is off to Bali for
love and balance to her life.
It is in Bali that she finds the most peace and challenges.
She falls in love, makes friends, helps friends, travels the
country, eats, prays and loves. The book makes one aware of
eating wonderful cuisine, the need for prayer in our lives and
that love can be found in strange places if one opens their
eyes and listens to their heart.

The 43rd Annual Masonic-K of C Community Dinner will
be at the Mary Help of Christian Undercroft on September 19

The high school football season
kicked off over the weekend with county
squads posting four wins in six games on
the evening.
Marion Local posted the most
impressive victory of the opening night
in a 34-13 romp over Western Buckeye
League member Lima Shawnee. Alex
Post ran for 148 yards on 17 carries
and added a pair of scores to lead the
Flyers to the victory with quarterback
Ryan Mescher completing 6 of 16 passes
for 52 yards on the night. The Flyers
racked up 17 first downs compared to the
Indians’ four in a complete domination
of the contest. After Lima Shawnee
scored first, Marion Local responded
with a 27-point second quarter to take
control of the game. Greg Schwieterman
had four receptions for 40 yards and
two scores to pace the Flyers. Marion
Local outgained Lima Shawnee 378-229
on the evening. Indian running back
Jamiil Williams had 127 rushing yards
on eight carries, including a 76-yard run
for a score.
Coldwater went on the road for the
season opener and the Cavaliers came
home with a 50-31 loss to the host
Wildcats. The loss was the first for
Coldwater in the season opener since
2001, a 31-16 defeat to the Wildcats.
Reese Klenke had 13 receptions for
204 yards and four touchdowns to pace
the Cavalier offense while quarterback
Austin Bruns completed 22 of 46 passes
for 229 yards and five scores. Bruns also
led Coldwater with 36 rushing yards.
Kenton racked up 473 passing yards and
552 yards of total offense in the win,
led by junior quarterback Maty Mauk.
Mauk was 38 of 59 through the air for
437 yards with five scores. Mauk also
ran for 73 yards on 21 carries including
a pair of touchdowns. Max Morrison
recorded 13 catches for 94 yards and
Andrew Tillman added 11 receptions
for 146 yards for Kenton. Dustin Howell
chipped in with eight receptions for 141
yards for the Wildcats.
At Celina, the host Bulldogs fell in
the season opener 35-14 to Versailles.
Kahl Knapke had six receptions for 123
yards on the night, including a 25-yard
catch to open the game’s scoring. Braden
Bilger was 13 of 33 through the air for
189 yards for Celina, tossing a pair of
touchdown passes. Celina was limited
to 86 rushing yards and 275 yards of
total offense while Versailles posted 475
yards on the night, 300 of which came
via the passing game. Andy Sutter
added 87 rushing yards on 18 carries
for Celina.
Fort Recovery opened the season
with an impressive 28-0 win over
Mississinewa Valley Friday evening
in non-league action. Kenny Wenning
passed for 193 yards and a pair of scores
to lead the Indians to the win, completing
12 of 16 passes on the evening. Wenning
also ran the ball 19 times and picked
up 73 yards. Derek Gaerke also scored
a pair of touchdowns for the Indians,
recovering a blocked punt for one score
before catching a 33-yard touchdown
Anna swept past Fort Recovery
in action Saturday evening in Fort
Recovery. Holly Brunswick had five
kills and five aces for the lady Indians
with Shelby Brunswick and Chelsea
Pottkotter adding two aces each.
At the Coldwater Spikeoff
Tournament on Saturday, St. Henry
finished second and Coldwater took third
out of the eight teams that participated.
Fort Loramie posted a 16-25, 25-14 and
25-18 win over the lady Redskins in the
championship match of the tournament.
The host lady Cavaliers picked up a
20-25, 25-16 and 25-21 victory over
New Knoxville in the consolation match.
In the first round, St. Henry recorded
a 25-13, 25-11 win over Wayne Trace
before defeating New Knoxville in the
semi-finals by scores of 25-10 and 25-18.
Coldwater got past Edgerton 25-12, 25-9
in the opening round but dropped a
30-28, 25-21 decision to Fort Loramie
in the semis.
GIRLS SOCCER
Celina got six goals in each half in
cruising to a 12-0 win over Coldwater
in girls soccer action at the home of the
Bulldogs.
The lady Bulldogs moved to 3-0 on
the season with a 4-3 win over Sidney
on Saturday with Klosterman posting
six saves in the contest. Bethany Parker,
Mackenzie Rutschilling and Taylor
Guingrich picked up the green and white
goals on the night.
Coldwater garnered its first win of the
season with a 3-0 win over Greenville at
the home of the Cavaliers. Carly Schlater
had two goals and Alexis Hoying added
one as the orange and black moved to 1-1
on the season.
TENNIS
Celina posted a 5-0 win over Defiance
in a non-league meeting that was part of
the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association
team tournament. Brianna Beougher
posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Melissa
Barth in first singles while Emily Zender
defeated Katie Straley 6-0, 6-0 in second
singles. The third singles match saw
Katie Pyle get by Colleen Johns 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, Audra and Samantha
Manci rolled past Taylor Vogelsong and
Megan Frey 6-0, 6-0 while the second
doubles team of Katie Kerr and Allison
Laux cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over
Abby Polce and Karen Krontz.
Celina took part in the Lima
Invitational on Saturday and the Bulldogs
came home with a sixth place finish as
a team. The lady Bulldogs’ Miranda
Werling fell in the semifinals of A singles
to St. Marys’ Mariah Krugh by scores of
6-2, 6-3 while Emily Nighswander was
the consolation winner in C singles. In
doubles action, the pair of Leah Rose
and Brooke Sutton fell to Van Wert’s
Lindsay Smith and Katie Etter by scores
of 6-2, 6-1.
BOYS SOCCER
Celina opened the season with a
disappointing start and the Bulldogs
never recovered in falling to Findlay
6-0. Mark Sleasman opened the scoring
only 24 seconds into the contest for the
Trojans and finished with three goals
while teammate Trey Bracy added a pair
of scores. Evan Zeller picked up the final
Findlay goal.
GIRLS GOLF
Course. Brad Shaffer led Parkway with
a 40 to claim medalist honors while Brian
Schatzer chipped in a 41 for the Panthers.
Jordan Bollenbacher and Brandon Beeks
each had a 43 for the black and gold with
Chris Brazle and Corey Decker both
carding a 49.
Coldwater used a 40 from Alex
Bruggeman and a 45 by Caleb
Muhlenkamp to post a 179-180 win over
New Knoxville. Justin Slaven had a 41 to
lead the Rangers.
Defiance picked up a 160-193
Western Buckeye League victory over
Celina at Kettenring Country Club. Josh
Scott and Drew Small each had a 39 for
Defiance with Henry Welsgerber, Jacob
Moore and Jacob Behringer all adding
41’s. Alex Ray paced Celina with a
43 followed by Derek Waterman (49),
Brandon Casto (49) and Ryan Miller
(52).
It took the fifth person tiebreaker but
Marion Local escaped with the win over
St. Henry despite both schools shooting
a 175. Tucker Smith posted a 46 for the
Flyers to just nip the Redskins’ 48 from
Jordan Rammel and Alex Evers. The
Flyers’ Elking and the Redskins’ Nate
Clune each shot a 39 to tie for medalist
honors while Chad Gerlach added a 42
for St. Henry.
In a tri-match at Deerfield Golf
Course, Parkway split with Van Wert
and Coldwater. The Cougars took first
with a 157 while both the Panthers
and Cavaliers carded a 163. However,
Parkway’s Brandon Beeks shot a 43
compared to Coldwater’s 53 from Caleb
Muhlenkamp to give the black and gold
the fifth man tiebreaker. Coldwater’s
Jordan Diller claimed medalist honors
with a 37 with Matt Kaiser adding a
39 and Alex Bruggeman shooting a 41.
Shaffer and Schatzer each carded a 40
to lead Parkway with Bollenbacher and
Brazle adding a 41 and 42, respectively.
Beeks and Decker posted scores of 43
and 44.
At The Elks, New Bremen posted a
164-180 win over Coldwater behind a 38
from the Cardinals’ Kyle Evers. Alex
Bruggeman had a 41 to lead the black
and orange.
Schatzer shot a 37 and Beeks added
a 38 to lead Parkway past Delphos St.
John’s 154-177 at Deerfield Golf Course.
Shaffer and Decker chipped in a 39 and
40 while Bollenbacher and Brazle posted

Celina in WBL action at Tamarac Golf

We are looking at only the
second week of the high school
football season and the coaches
are getting their kids to focus
only on the game at hand, not
the ones two months down the
road. It is okay for us fans,
however, to check the scores
of conference teams and non-
league opponents and speculate
what, if anything, the early
results mean for November. I
am sure the coaching staffs are
already giving some thought to
the playoffs even if the kids are
not permitted to do so.
